As winter approaches I've been looking at my winter wheels/tire set and wondering if the stock 14" black steelies my tires are mounted on would look any better in silver. Anyone ever painted them silver?
I've found plenty of examples of black, texture, powdercoat, and even a red example...but no silver! Just wondering how they look. Anyone?.... |

They look great with classic chrome VW hubcaps.
Don't paint them silver, by the way...too bright; look for "steel" color wheel paint, silver looks like a sad hack job. Make sure you clear-coat it, too, for longevity. _________________ '86 Syncro CHC Top AAZ Turbodiesel

I suppose "steel" is what I really meant Silver, literally, would be a bit much ha.
Was hoping to try and duplicate the look of the Mefro 16's people are sporting. I'd like to get a full life out of these tires before upgrading to a larger rim size at some point. I know the stock steelies look totally different...just wondering HOW different in a "steel" color.
@ajdenette...I like the look! Silver hubs look nice, and seem like they would be an affordable option. Thanks for posting! Do the wheels look weird without the caps? |

I sprayed the stock steelies on my Doka with some rattle can silver from the local auto parts store. I hit the hubs & lugs with black paint. I thought they looked much better than the old scraped-up plastic covers...worked a treat until I came up with the scratch for VC Carrot Rims..

I painted my OEM Vanagon wheels with aluminium spray paint and I liked it so much I did my 16" Mercedes steelies too.
I think they look freaking great, no matter what some actor from New York thinks!

I helped a friend paint his rims with a spray can product from eastwood. I thought it came out pretty well and held up _________________ 85 Westfalia, Auto, 2.2 Subie |

These examples are exactly what I'm looking for...proof that they'll look good! I'll be heading to the store later today to check out paint selection, I'll try and post pics of a before and after.
Thanks guys! |

Rustoleum makes a "hammered" silver/gray paint that looks pretty good. |
