ok gentlemen, removed the body off our 58 and this is what we see. twisted spring plate, both sides about the same amount. the tunnel which we seen before, has a cut in it and the shift rod sits a bit high, and a transaxle from maybe the 60's? any ideas and or fixes would be appreciated. _________________ 58 ragtop |

post pics of the plates
when installing a 61 up trans in a 59 and earlier chassis you need either an adapter front mount or a early bus nose cone and hockey stick with regular mount.
Back in the day when these conversions were done without the above options some hacking of the pan tunnel was usually required. Ive seen the hack so bad that they cut the vin numbers to clear the shift rod. _________________ Grapes of Wrath $200 Engine Rebuild

Plates normally twist as part of the suspension movement. The twist comes near the end of suspension travel, as a design feature to give a progressive spring rate-- soft at center for soft ride, stiffer at extremes to prevent bottoming.
I'm no expert but the gallery pic does not look extraordinary to me.

Spring plates look normal. Without the weight of the body on the car the rear wheels go to positive camber a little more then they normally would otherwise. That puts a little more twist to the spring plates.
The hack on the tunnel needs to be fixed. You may be able to make some special pulling tools that would allow you to get the pieces back in place and weld them back together. Or cut that hack cut out and replace it with new metal.
The VIN may be a problem, but If I knew the history of the car was good and legal I wouldn't have any problem with making up an aluminum plate to cover the hacked area of the vin stamp, and stamping the original VIN onto that. But in sme states they require a VIN inspection and that may not fly. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |
