Do you get this problem? I'm always being 'raced' and overtaken as if I am driving a fast car, which I am not of course. It's annoying, what do you do? Maybe this is just a French thing... they seem to take no prisoners.

The other day an old Fiat caught up from miles away and went past at about 90 mph, I slowed before we reached a blind bend. He was very happy and punching the air... It's hard not to get drawn in...

I would assume that even a very modified Fiat (500?) is not much match for most modern cars. This guy probably got excited that he saw an older car that he could "show off" for.

You need a bigger engine Wink

raced, no. often, people would just assume I'm slow since I'm on a bug and try to overtake me with whatever crappy two-cylinders polish car they drive (pun intended). In these cases I usually just slow down and let them go their way.

Better to looks slow and be fast, than look fast and be slow.

I used to love when a kid, driving their dad's "muscle car" would pull up to a red light and rev the engine. I would hit the line lock and smoke the tires for a few seconds.

Now adays, I don't care.

2180, dual IDAs, Berg 5 speed and ZD LSD.

..not that I condone street racing...

Another tactic is to beat 'em in the corners. Get the suspension dialed, brakes upgraded, good tires, and learn how to safely drive near the limits. Sure, they might still take you on the straights, but given enough corners, it's possible to put many big power vehicles to shame.

I'm out of this thread before it goes bad. Razz

I have people try to race me just about every time I take the bug out. I ignore most of the people. But when something like a nice new C7 Corvette pulls up next to me, well thats kinda hard to resist. I can tell you that some people get really mad when they cant beat a Bug with their $70k vehicle.

Never been raced, but the muscle cars do either catch up and/or slow down slightly to drive along side for a bit and give a smile or a thumbs up. Kinda like an adopted kid brother or something. Bugs are cool.

The problem I have is everyone thinks that a VW will hold them back so they always pull out in front of me an I have to slow up for them.

I surprised a few other drivers with my old 1970 single cab.

It had a modified 2.7 Porsche engine and 901 gearbox. Very Happy

Even though it never ran properly (stock fuel injection combined with a hotter cam and stupid-high compression) I really miss that truck.

OK everybody stroked their willy a few times now? Are we done with trying to make ourselves feel better yet again about owning a cheap bug instead of a $70k car by claiming BS race wins etc? Your souped up bug ain't beating a $70k vette PERIOD. Prove it.
And don't show me the mighty car mods video, they weren't trying with the Porsche.

That was NOT the OP's point of this thread, to him I say "yeah I don't get it either."

In the states it's hard to get excited passing a bug since everyone knows they can. To Buggeees point. It would be like getting excited to walk pass a person in a wheel chair. But you have mad respect for the person.

Now when a car passes me up hill in my bus they get excited and sometimes give a different hand gesture Wink

Europe is full of small displacement engines. So probably more common there I suspect.

As a new owner of a bug. They sure are fun to drive Very Happy

Yeah they are fun to drive, fast or slow.
That is a very nicely done car Glenn.

Maybe they all expect old beetles to be modified. The annoying thing is the safety aspect. Because I have a relatively new stock but tuned 1600, it goes pretty good and will do the full 85mph all day, but it isn't what I would calll fast, yet it can keep up and does not slow down traffic, but they all just have to overtake, even on dangerous occasions, if I am 'blocking them'.

Actually, once when I was driving in the Alps, a Golf did overtake me going very fast and I thought to myself he's going to crash, and as I went round the next bend he had in fact crashed into a Saab going the other way. They both spun and he hit the barrier on the edge of a sheer precipice. There was diesel all over the road, we had to drag the cars apart to get though to keep going. I looked at the guy. He was super normal, limping a bit, not dressed for being up a snowy mountain, looked like he should be in an office, it was cold.

I find old muscle car drivers to be fine, they usually give a nod, and drive well. Its more the recent cars, seems they have to prove something.

Haha that made me chuckle a bit. Im sorry that you dont like my water cooled non VW powered Bug. I am sure if it was still air cooled you would like it. I could really care less if you believe me or not. But let me throw out some numbers to help you understand.

My Bug
- 450hp 2200lbs

New Vette
- 460hp 3500lbs

You must be right. The Vette has more power so it would win.

The one thing you are actually right about is the OPs point. I read his post a bit too fast. No I dont have any problems with people trying to pass me thinking I drive an originally slow Bug. Its me trying to pass the slow people!

Glenn - Its all good. Not the first time someone has tried to call BS on me. My boss did the same thing but quickly shut up when the little Bug was pulling on his Lambo...

Years ago, a local guy had a LT-1 (from a 71 Camaro) in the back seat with a Porsche 930 transaxle.

It was a BEAST.

Looks pretty serious.

My other car is an old Peugeot 305, people hate it and just have to pass as well. Funny, its actually like the opposite of a beetle, everything is up front. Have to have the front tyres pumped pretty hard.

Dammit - I'm back in. Smile

Here's a real world example of power versus handling from our region's autocross last weekend. Both drivers have 10+ years of autocross experience and are excellent drivers.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

No, It's not a beetle, just an '80's Sh*t-box with 70-hp and fat Hosier A7's on all 4 corners. The Corvette has about 450 hp.

My point: there's more to going fast than just power. Going fast in a straight line is OK, but the corners is where time is made, and where the fun happens.

Ya I bet that trans was not very happy with a tq monster in front of it! But would be a blast.

And that pic is the old engine. New one looks the same but does about 50hp more.

Or you can have power and traction and get a couple of these...
