I've been reading the information on the site for awhile now and you guys are an awesome source for information. But i've come upon a problem that I need to actively ask a question about; I found on ebay an air-conditioning system that is described as being for a VW Karmann Ghia, is this even accurate? I thought the point of these cars (VW's) were to be simple peoples cars, and A/C would be too much.
At any rate, if you guys could take a look and tell me if you think I should even bother with making a bid.
VW Volkswagen Air Conditioner AC Ghia (ebay item# 130424197696)

Thanks all. |

I sold the air conditioning system out of my ghia a couple of years ago. It was a DPD unit and didn't look anything lik that one. |

Thanks! I saw that shipping and wasn't sure about it. Too bad I couldn't just pick it up.
Glad I asked here before just making a bid that might have lost my shirt. I'll now know where my bid should be. |

Its a little difficult to tell from the photos but from what I can see it doesn't look like an old dealer installed unit.
You would have to assume that nothing works on this and everything needs to be rebuilt. Also it will need all new seals to handle the new refrigerants being used. New lines would be required as well as those look old and worn.
$120 for shipping seems high to ship anywhere in the US from IL since they are pretty much in the center of the country. I would expect the cost to be about half that amount to ship in the US.
Unless you know auto AC units and can rebuild this yourself or have a good mechanic willing to take this on I would pass. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |

Hello, I have a blister pac for a dealer installed ac. Its missing the under-dash unit. Most of the pieces are there. This is just for FYI. I think there were a few kits, I'm not sure which one this is

x2. Assume everything needs to be rebuilt/refurbished/replaced. All hoses would need to be replaced, electrical system replaced, I doubt the blower motor works. I don't see the compressor or either of the two heat exchangers, so you'd have to buy all those other pieces to get it working.
I think the original underdash unit didn't come in multiple pieces like the one shown (but I'm not an expert in the original AC system). _________________ Lon

Mine had a dealer installed DPD unit, probably like boat builders. It was junky looking, a total after-thought for the car. The refrigerant lines were hoses strapped up to the underside of the pan, they had to put holes all over the place to run the hoses and wiring, the fuse box was relocated, etc, etc. It looked like they installed it with a hatchet. I pulled the whole thing off and trashed it. |
