Greetings from Germany!
I have an '85 Westy, and a 2001 H6 motor with all the trimmings. I need parts and advice. Cooling parts and advice. I have everything RJES has to offer, and I have the SmallCar manifold. I need an engine carrier and I need coolant plumbing.
I am giving myself another month to get stuff together. I can't afford to keep buying coolant for my van. I'm refilling and bleeding the system every week! I know where it's leaking, and I'd rather replace the motor with something better than do a tear-down and rebuild.

I've posted on half a million VW boards, and sick of going in circles.

If you postup a list of everything that you currently have, perhaps we could be of more assistance in suggesting sources for the remainder.
Cooling system: Tom Shiels Concept 5
Harness: Tom Shiels - it will work first time and everytime
Eg. from your post I don't know if you have the RJES bellhousing or not - if not, then Smallcar bellhousing and engine supports, but if you do - then what does RJES suggest?

Thanks for that, Jon. Burley says hi by the way. I spoke to him on the phone and I sent him a parts list. I sure hope he can help. This has been a bit of a fight.

These are the parts I have on hand or enroute:
H6 engine, wiring harness, computer, ignition key transponder, RJES bellhousing, fuel pump, engine mounts, throttle cable, VSS, filters, clutch shaft, starter, flywheel, clutch disk, pressure plate, SmallCar header, and assorted bolts.

In the meantime, if you're leaking tons of coolant from your current engine, just use water. The environment will thank you and as long as your engine isn't running super hot, it'll do fine with just water for a while. Of course if it's freezing out, you'll need the toxic green goo.

There are numerous H6 3.0 conversions being done here in the States right now. Be patient, pictures and info will start to trickle down.

Ok, so it's not 'pouring' out, but rather, I have a hole in the sealant on the 2/4 side bottom. It's not enough to really push the coolant out (I've tried the sealants, no luck!). I think what it is, is as the system cools, it draws air in. And pushes it out the overflow. Just about every day, I am draining the overflow into a 1 liter juice bottle, opening the pressure tank, and refilling it. If I leave my overflow empty, I can get to work and back ok. It's the longer drives that make the light blink.

What starter did you choose? RJES starter for the same engine.

Yeah, um, NOT stealing it... more like helping me to see what it will look like. Thank you. What is this black box? I don't have that one. The starter I have is a reman from my shop. Who did the engine carrier, and where can I get the schematics for it? I think I could find a German guy here to fabricate it for me....

This is great. Looks good.

oh, I wish I did. I'll look out there for it. I found this last january while researching my second project. the vintage is
2001 to 2004 from an LL Bean outback. very difficult to find. this was a synchro conversion with the obvious conversion
bell housing plate and flywheel. It will lay aft that much further than yours. this guy welded a bunch of steel under it for
protection too. kind of heavy. He left the cat off too. strange, because this was the cleanest engine subaru
had built to date [emissions]
the black box is the vanagon ecu and shield...is that what you are referring to? I'll look.....

No, I didn't get one from him. But he did tell me which one to get. A starter from a manual xmsn Impreza, NOT the automatic.
The clutch is for the turbo Impreza, the clutch disk is a 228mm from CB Performance, and the pressure plate is for the same turbo'd Impreza.

I would factor in a gearbox rebuild in your budjet, I have seen the gearbox from the above syncro conversion and it is not pretty what a H6 can do to gearbox. It smashed the pinion bearing nut, destroyed the crownwheel and pinion and pushed the pinion shaft into the gearbox.

Syncro boxes are very hard and expensive to come by here in Australia.

Vanagon boxes are probably cheap and more plentiful in Germany, but an overhaul and some heavy duty internal would be a good choice.

Richard from RJES says the stocker is good, mate. No worries. Cheers though.
And no, T3 parts here are getting to be hens teeth. All the wreckers here packed it all in, and shipped the lot to South Africa. For scrap. If I want a new tranny, mate, I gotta ring up GoWesty for a new one.

2001 is a good year for the engine--the sand car guys like the 2005 to 2008 ez30r because it has reflowed heads and a more complex cam timing control system. 6 exhaust ports as well. but all of that is managed by a stand-alone ecu, and there is no suby trans to wire to.
for wiring simplicity the 01 is a good one. no immobilizers. You get to use the suby starter too with the rjes kit?
If I ever hang another engine off the fantail, it will be the ez30d.
gorgeous!
