PostPosted: Tue Mar 11, 2014 6:49 am    Post subject: Engine Parts Question, Crank and Rods Reply with quote

I am in the process of collecting parts for a type 4 build. I need to get some information on some normal wear items. I know that there are no set-in-stone answers for my particular questions. I just need some generalities.

I know where a 79 bay is that has been sitting for 20 years. I was thinking of purchasing the engine out of this one so that I could get the 2.0 crank and rods out of it.

What is the general state of such parts in the bay window world? Are they generally usable, completely trashed, or usable after a lot of work? remember, in general.

The engine is quite complete. All of the FI system is still in tact, and the engine turns free and feels decent for having sat. It does still have oil in the case. Looks like it may have been a runner when parked in the 90's.

I know that I will know nothing for certain till I crack the case, but I was wondering if it was even worth taking a chance?

I would grab it. I beleive most Busses were parked due to the heads. Normally the bottom end is pretty solid. Crank and rods shouldn't need much if any machine work.

But then again it could be rusted up inside. Do a little investigating. Make sure there is no water in the case.

Thanks for the reply. I will have to check it out.

Last I remember, the oil in the thing looked good. I do not remember any water being on the dipstick or the dipstick showing any rust. I will check again. It even has a new oil filter on it.

2.0 heads are usually shot. That I know. What is the case worth? Would there be any other usable parts that someone would want off of a 79 that are specific to that year?

The '79 heads have rectangular exhaust ports- so the exhaust/heat exchangers are a one year item- get them.

I'd take the whole thing.

I did get the heat exchangers already. I sold them.

The heads looked great from the outside, but nothing would be certain till they were pulled off.

What are they worth if they are in a rebuildable state? I'm just trying to see if I can cover my cost.

Look in the classifieds to see what used heads are being sold for. Once off the engine with no compression test or leak down data they are pretty much just a core.
Last I looked there were a few'short blocks' for sale for rebuilding.
