Well, It is finally time to post up on this project. I guess I should have started this thread a long time ago, but since I waited so long it will actually look like I got it done real fast! Razz

I bought this car for my wife about 5 years ago, it sat for 2 years, I bought a bus project Shocked and for the past 2 1/2 years have been trying to get it done. I must say though it is not completely my fault. A friend of mine, (1 man shop) was doing the metal repair, bodywork, and paint. To be fair, his price was very reasonable, his work is incredible, and he helped me out with many things along the way....so there are no hard feelings....but it was just time to move it out of his shop and get it done. He has had a lot of personal things come up along the way, so we agreed to call it quits...Disappointing as I really wanted him to finish it as did he.

Here are some pics of when I brought it home and I will continue to post some of the transformation as I get time.

I've never seen so many colors on a stock bug.

Haha, yeah...it was definitely a rainbow of sorts. It had an ugly brown respray over the whole car but since the car was "baja'd" the original fenders and aprons were gone. Thus the multicolored look. Add chunks of bondo and wala! You can kind of see it in the parcel tray area but the original color was Turkis.

We're going to go with a resto-cal look on. I wanted to try and get as many original parts to the year as possible but my wife wanted to change up the color, chrome empi five spokes, lowered a bit in front and a "not so stock" engine! Very Happy

Wow, lots of luck with that! Did it come with an engine? Did you (or your wife) already decide on a color?

The car was fairly complete with most of the hard to find parts. I had no look for others. You can see the vert decklid...had to find that..not cheap Crying or Very sad and the correct 3 tab flat hood..not real cheap either considering the bodywork needed...anyway to answer your question, no engine. I purchased an engine and have gone through it all, powdercoated tin, rebuilt carbs, etc and it's all dialed in. 1835cc with Weber 40's. Car color is a GM Hummer color called Sunburst Orange. Like I said, it's my wife's car and I said she could do whatever she wanted...well except paint it pink! I said, I ain't driving no pink car! Very Happy

After we got it back from the sandblaster, it uncovered a bit more rust than we anticipated...big shock! Here are some photos of the frame rail replacement.

The parcel tray had been pieced together at some point and that was the only good part. The rest was like swiss cheese. You will see that we eventually opted to replace the whole thing at the factory welds to make it right.

Would you please give some details about the type of weld used to put the front clip on. I have to weld real bumper mounts on a 63,

Thanks Geoff

Your Kickin' some Booty on your Convertable, It's going to be Cool when it's done. Then you get to see Your Wife Pull out of the Driveway to go Shopping with her Best friend and your standing in the driveway with greasy hands and a torn T-Shirt. Fun Times. One thing I noticed is your Axle Boots should have the mounting screws and nuts at the 9 or 3 o'clock position (less stress on the Seam) You have them at the 12 O'clock position. Yeah Nice to see your progress pic's. Keep them coming. Smile

Everything about a VW is simple, even the colors. I think the German's figured it was easier to spell Turkis than Turquoise...take a look at the forum's most English speaking people can't even spell it right! Laughing

I hope you take those carbs off before you try dropping the body back on.

If not, you will have a bad day.

All that work and you didn't paint the fan?
