I have never converted a swing to IRS, but looking at what the bus guys do with bolt on kits, I started wondering if you could locate the IRS pivots further out from the center of the chassis and use trailing arm spacers and the stock IRS trailing arms to do this conversion. Longer axles would be needed too, but the bolt on option could possibly give more inner pivot angle adjustabilty for camber?? You could just weld it up after positioning like you want it. Increased track width for sure.. just thinking out loud......

It sounds like a good idea but bolted on pivots may not stay that way long while off roading. Especially if I'm driving. I extended my bajas rear torsion 6' on each side by sleeving it with chrome moly tubing. In hind sight it would of taken almost the same amount of time just to cut out the old one. |

I think welding the pivit closer to the spring plate would allow for more flexing of the trailing arm because moving two points of suspension closer together multiplies the force/torque needed to maintain the axle stub position.
Now if you extend the torsion housing like perrib states, I think it would be fine, but that defeats the simple nature of your thought, doesn't it? _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Designed for a bus conversion, not a beetle.

Wonder if you can buy just the brackets. I have a 58 Single cab I want to convert to IRS, and I have a 78 donor bus. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Yes. Bus Boys will sell brackets separate. I have a '59 SC that I thought about converting to IRS and I also have a complete '74 rear setup to use. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

Is there a big difference? Could that one work for a bug? |

Anything can be made to work on anything else, but this kit Bus Boys makes will not just bolt onto a beetle. _________________ Bad News Racing 2018 NORRA 1000 3rd in Class

| If your going to drive off road your going to want to sleeve it and plug weld it to the adapter and the torsion housing. |

The Bus torsion is 1" bigger than a Bug torsion. I like the idea, you might be able to fab up some brackets. _________________ I suffer from a serious disorder : Volkswagenitis |

I have been toying with a very similar idea for a long time except only extending out 2 inches instead of 3 inches like the adapters from McKenzies do. Reason being is the ability to use stock parts except for the 2 inch extension on the torsion housing which I would make.
Using 26 9/16 torsion bars and the 2 inch extension I would be able to use stock spring plates for intermediate length torsion bars (24 11/16) and stock length bus axles as typical in a 2x3 extended arm application. Bolt on the adapter( could be welded also),weld on the IRS adapter 2 inches further out than normal and you are done. No cutting of the rear frame horn. |

| If you go 3 " wider torsion and 2" longer arms wouldn't it be the same as 2x3 arms |

| I believe it is the other way around. 2x3 are 2 inches wider and 3 inches longer. |
