Seems to me, on this fine website we have intelegent people of all ages and walks of life.
Folks who not only know what's up, but also willing to share.
Not only just about VWs but also technical subjests in general, and sometimes subjects that have nothing to do with cars at all.
I cannot find a better messageboard with this combo of atitude and knowlege base.
A few come close, but at this point in time i'd say the samba wins.
Why do you think this is?
I mean why? Is owning a classic vw a sign of intelegence?
I always knew it was a sign of mental illness, but that in itself may be merely a side effect. |

The arguement could be made that this site is populated by an abundance of pompus, egotistical, know-it-alls, eager to offer up all sorts of opinions about any number of things they have no knowledge of. But I like your take on things better.
The mental illness works for both explainations. |

do you take engine parts in trade for membership?
haha
no really, freedom is needed to be fair, free for any bastard to post stuff he made up.
i just wanted to discuss message boards in general,
Some bloom and then die, like there is nothing left to say
Some become 100% populated with losers.
Some you trade porn for medical advice
And they didn't all start that way, it was how they evolved based on what kind of people became members. |

#2 and #3 have most to do with good moderators and website administration. There is nothing worse than a forum overrun with spam postings. It takes constant vigilance and creative programming to keep it to a minimum.
As for #1, I think we have such an active forum because the huge free classifieds section draws a lot of members. Keeping the information free and accessible also helps. _________________ Donate to TheSamba.com

Good job however you do it,
this place is certainly family friendly and free of spam.
Creative tactics are working
Creative?
hmmm, yes maybe that is it.
The design of the vw invites creativity, that is why I made the (unfortunate?) decision to get one(now 5) in the first place.
And you have to be determined to drive a 40 or 50 year old car.
So the average samba member is:
creative
determined
mentaly unstable
makes for a darn good forum! |

Not sure if owning a VW is a sign of intelligence, but I have noticed more than a few intelligent people on here. |

Can a case be made for the fact that there are a lot of INTELLIGENT people that haven't a lick of common sense thus the intelligence is wasted?
An example, I'll refer to a recent episode of the BIG BANG THEORY a current hit TV show featuring a group of geniuses. Their car broke down and the driver asked if anyone in the car knows anything about internal combustion engines? to which there was great affirmation. The next question was does anyone know how to repair one? and there was massive shaking of heads and utterances of No.
Recognize that there are many many formally uneducated people who's practical knowledge and common sense far far exceed that of many highly intelligent and educated people.
Sadly most often the great financial compensation goes to those who hold a degree but can't do squat to contribute to society, whereas those who actually do the work and have the knowledge to keep society as we know it functioning, barely get by financially except on a whim and a prayer.
Dave
EDIT: Yes, this is a great forum. Sometimes the playing gets rough but overall there is a lot of help and encouragement to be found here! And yes, I did finally make my contribution to support my right to play here! _________________ Stop Dead Photo Links how to post photos

Talent is not universal, that is for sure.
Myself being a good example, I test in the 99th percentile for vocabulary and reading, but my spelling has not improved since grade school.
A group of people with diverse talents on a free board like this can be a powerful thing. There is more in a few pages here than the local news has in an hour. How such a group forms and thrives is a mystery to me.
it must be like gardening. i'm terrible at that |

Because Ev sees all ads before anyone else and gets all the good deals.
And it's the slave labor they employ to run this place. _________________ Glenn

Because every single person that buys or sells parts/vehicles or has received valuable technical assistance sends a donation?
Nope.
We have the best damn VW website in the world and people take advantage of our insanely cheap advertising rates. Billionaire is a little strong, try thousandaire. _________________ Donate to TheSamba.com

I have to agree, this is a great site for the VW owner and VW admirers. I can't find a site that is near as good as this for Mercedes owners. Help me out Tram!! _________________ Never drive faster than your Angel can fly
