Well, I should add that we wrap up Tuesday and then it's on the transporter to come to its new home!

I swear I am like a kid at Christmas. I grew up in SoCal way back in the day and ran around with a bunch of older kids that all had VW's. I had so much fun in them. Now, at the tender age of 48, I finally will have my own.

The car is in pretty good shape. She has some rust issues that must be dealt with immediately. A little oogly in places but beautiful to me.Overall though, the car is relatively unmolested, sans the original owner who elected to sling the air intake and motor cover in the trash for the Kadrons.

So what are my plans for her you might ask? I will go through the car, then drive her for a few months. After that, it's body off resto time.
I am going bone stock (it's an old(er) guy thing) or as close as I can get. No dropping, dragging, hacking, spindling or mutilating. Respect to those that do but nothing is as sexy to me as a 45 year old seemingly factory fresh Type 3.

I need to thank Stevo here for working diligently to ensure I was comfortable purchasing the vehicle from another state. If your lights flickered last night, or your computer locked up, that was Stevo sending me 300 high res pics of everything good, bad, and ugly about the car. He was a class act, never growing tired of my endless questions.

I'll move pics to Picasa and post them in a few minutes.

Can I get a Woohoo ?

Nice ride. You have your work cut out for you with that rust (no pun intended) but its in better shape than mine. And the carb linkage kinda through me off too. What was the PO thinking? ....Or smoking?

I love the early fastbacks. I can only suggest you trade the carbs for a stock set and get a cover over the motor so you don't asphyxiate yourself. It looks like they put in a Bill and Steves flasher kit.

Thanks guys !

Definitely some rust to deal with which is made more complex (expensive) by the fact that I am not a body man.

As for the carbs/linkage, the story is that original owner drove for a long time. Car was then given to her older son after sitting. He was probably having problems with originals so he purchased the carb conversion.

I intend to drive for a bit. Hopefully that will give me time to run down some things (carbs, air intake, etc) and not be forced to trade my wife for them.

I am certain that I will be wearing everyone out with questions. I have already become adept with the search function.

Really happy I found an early one. I was looking for a while and you just don't see a whole lot of them around. I am unsure if that's because they are unliked by many (lack the popularity of the type 1) or that the squareback guys have killed them all! lol

fastback/squareback fenders are the same, but you still need a MIG welder and some rust free "cut to order" West Coast metal patch panels. Drive it while you work on it and don't get too anal! Very Happy

Keep your questions/pictures etc in This your "Red 66 Fasty" build thread. You can even change the Subject line for the first 6 months. It helps US easily remember which car we're talking about!

Does the fasty start/run/drive/stop?

Will do Mike.

She starts, runs like a corn cob, and kind of stops. The clutch catches 2 inches from the top which tells me that I'll be wrenching on the motor a little earlier than I intended. We just got back from draggin her off the truck. I'll post up a few pics shortly.

I had to replace the front rubber brake hoses to get mine to stop good. The rubber collapses inside and they can look good outside, but be plugged up inside.

Mike interesting that you bring up the brake hoses as I found a brand new set of fronts in the glove box.

We did get her unloaded. Plenty of room in the back of a 53 foot commercial trailer. I did about wet myself when I originally saw the straps. They were loose and only used to keep the back end from moving side to side.

Upon looking in the back of the trailer my lovely wife pointed to rear left tire in horror yelling, "it's bent it's bent!" Laughing She was serious. I couldn't help but point at the right rear and say," Oh my. So is the other one!" I then explained the suspension.

I putted the vehicle about an 1/8th of a mile up the road to my office. I was shocked when I noticed that VW smell that I remember as a kid.

Found this under the front seat. All of the knobs were in the glove box. No face plate though.

I think it was likely yanked during a 12V conversion. Or fried after !

This molding has a lot of life left.....

Failed to see these on the accessory list. They must be very, very rare! Twisted Evil

So the immediate list is:

Tires, fuel lines, rear brake lines, wheel bearings, ALL window, door, and compartment moldings. Also having an old ACVW guy crawl over the car with me to ensure it's safe enough to drive.

looks like somebody converted it to 12v already, save you a bunch of work.

the clutch is really easy to adjust, you won't have to tear into the motor to do that.

ninjer edit- If your planning on driving it right away, you'll want to completely go through the brakes:

all new rubber lines
rear wheel cylinders
have the master cylinder rebuilt (jim adney is the man for that)
inspection of all the hard lines
rebuild your front calipers
