I bought one of those tachometers you put on the dashboard. I tested it in the engine bay first. So needle does not go up very fast nor does it come back down fast either. I've never seen a tach on a vw before. but is that normal cuz the engine is a slow one or am i missing something? _________________ 1973 VW Squareback |

A cheap generic tachometer is Unlikely to read correctly. Better hook up a good tachometer/dwell meter at the same time and compare the 2 tachometers. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

I dont' have my type3 "at hand" to measure... what's the width of the clock face opening ? Or the width of the clock with or without the chrome bezel? _________________ 1965 Sunroof Beetle

Clock and fuel gauge housing is 85mm, and with bezel the face is about 90mm, Cheers. |

to answer your original question most generic tachs are set up to run a 4,6, 0r 8 cylinder motor if the needle is very erratic check for a switch to adjust this setting. I have heard of people putting the Jiggler/vibrator like on the gas guage to accomplish a cleaner needle movement but have not tried this. the green wire on most generic tachs goes to the same point on your coil as your condensor. and there is a seperate power wire (red) as well. I have never seen one I could not get to work smoothly . Sun makes a tach the same size as the clock in most type 3 and I did the same to mine. Although Gizmobobs looks a whole lot more stock than mine. I will post a link to my phot bucket once I verify I have that pic up |

I ran a long wire from the dash, along the tunnel (under the carpet) and out through the grommet under the rear seat in the battery compartment, and back into the engine bay... _________________ póg mo thóin

Without the FI, I've been thinking of running the wire through the extra fuel line since I've got the pan off. |

Recall seeing a post about using the unused red wire in the loom that is not used in manual trans models.
I know that my square has it in the engine wiring and in the wiring under the dash.

I've just up-graded mine with a tachometer which looks "at home" in my dash...
It's a vintage Smiths (made in UK) vintage 70's something tach. it's a perfect fit into the clock opening.
With a redline that you can setup wherever you like
