Hey folks. My girlfriend and I are on a road trip from Canada and are heading south. Looks like we may need an engine rebuild on our 1980 Vanagon Westy. Just wondering if anybody knows of any mechanics in Santa Rosa, CA that could handle this job? Thanks for the help. [/i]

I haven't used them but I have heard good things about Valley Wagonworks in San Rafael (about 30 miles south of Santa Rosa).

I never dealt with either of them before I left town 13 years ago, but I always heard good things about Tillman's and Vassar. If it helps any, a friend who still lives in town will only let Fred @ Vassar Automotive touch her '72 Beetle. Might also be worth seeing if Hoch Motors is still around and has a recommendation, they used to buy/refurb/sell Vanagons on the south end of Santa Rosa Ave near Todd Road...

Why?
What's happening that makes you think so?

I have been experiencing really low power and thought it was maybe a timing issue. Brought it in to German Motor in Arcata and the owner checked compression. #1 has no compression #2 has 145psi #3 has 90psi and #4 is at 132psi. So I'm being told I need a rebuild.

Roger Sartori of Sartorial Automotive is a great guy. He was a VW factory tech in the 70s and 80s but now works on anything. I doubt he does rebuilds, but he is a great resource. Lcoated right behind the new car dealerships off 101.

Two hours away in Sac, Stehpan's Auto Haus does most of my maintenance. While they don't do air-cooled, they are Vanagon fanatics. They can help direct you. Tyler, a tech there, does most of my work and drives air cooled himself.

I haven't been to Valley Wagen Works myself, but I met Paul at Syncrofest, very nice guy, and they come highly recommended by local Vanagon folks.

I've heard of, but don't know the name of, an air cooled oriented shop in Cotati.

The Garage in Petaluma likes and Works on Old VWs. They have helped me out many times. It is going to be hard to find someone willing to rebuild it with a quick turn over. Call the Garage and ask them what they think.

I guess zero compression is a reason!

Do unplug the injector for the dead cylinder so you don't do even more damage driving it. The unburned fuel will wash down the rings, destroy your O2 sensor and damage your catalytic convertor!
