I removed the old one and need to plug some holes. What was the hole for? There is a hole on the new one. What is it for? Thanks.

before the purists jump on and tell you to put the OE one back on, I'll give you the answer. That is for the vent next to the oil fill to hook to, same as should have been on the oe one. like below

yea, that's where the old one went to, but what does it do? The hole on the new one is a lot smaller. Should I fit a hose to the same place as the old one? Thanks.

But nothing to do with purity-it's functionally a better air filter

I'll take the purity to the next level,, find A oil bath filter! 2nd pick would be to run A well oiled gauze filter, IE: K&N.. that little foam filter looks A lot better then it well ever work.

An oil bath filter does a superior job then the chromey one. The oil bath has a built in velocity stack also.

That chrome job will allow rain water to fill up your engine and cause hydrolock, rust and all sorts of headache.

Take it off, throw it away, put your old filter back on or as suggested get an oil bath for it.

These filters are simply garbage, however I don't have any strong feeling about them! Shocked

Run the original filter... it will do a better job of taking the crap out of the air.

OK, the original PO asked what the hose was for. Not if he should or shouldn't run the chrome airfilter.

That hose sucked crankcase fumes and sent them to be burned. VW's first smog control device.

Now that the question has been answered, I will pile on the original oil bath train. In addition to the functionality, I find a certain elegance in the design. They are just sexy to me Embarassed . I just bought an oil bath (here) for under $25 and restored it.

Wow!! nice work Cool I'm with you, the oil bath just looks like it belongs on the VW motor, It's part of the 'ART' the one thing I hate about having Kadrons(no oil bath)

I adapted 36hp oil bath air cleaners to the Kadrons. Works great and has a velocity stack.
