It's kinda funny how I have noticed that on many ads for Ghias being sold, when reasons are given for why they are selling the car, it almost always has to do with a new Baby in the house.
So is this an easy reason to give for why a person is selling a car or are Babies really Ghia Dream killers!?

Yes, when you have a 7lb. baby it will be neccesary to buy a new Chevy Suburban or other large SUV. |

Funny, I have two boys under 3 and I'm looking at ghias now. Well, pre-72 or 72-74 + seat. But then, I'll drive a winter "beater" (97 Subi) and the ghia in the summer. |

I sold mine (a nice, original, low mileage late '57 Coupe) to help fund the adoption of my son.
Had money not been so tight at that time in my life, I'd have kept it and continued to enjoy it... with my little assistant! _________________ David Ruby

I fully intend to keep my Ghia if and when I have kids. The laws in CA allow me to strap a child carrier in my front seat; that kid's going to look pretty cool. |

In the late 70's when I was a 20-30 something like a lot of you Sambanistas are today I had a `65. I built a 1641 DP with Kads and single QP for it, swapped the bias plies for nice radials; your basic upgrade as you roll.
Along came life with location change -> relationship -> wife -> kids and the Ghia got jetisoned along the way. When I sold it I kept the 1641 to put in my `67 13 window splitty. Eventually that went bye bye too.
Here, in my advancing year,s a I snapped a `69 (always my favorite) that came my way and I'm doing the same rolling upgrade. The cool part is it looks virtually identical; light yellow with platinum gray primer spots.
You can go back. _________________ Who's ur Data? |

The Ghia lover in me says, "Hell, yeah!" but the pediatrician in me has to say that, whether or not the law allows it, that's a really bad idea with regard to safety for the (theoretical) baby. _________________ '71 Ghia cabriolet |

That's why I sold my 68 as 15 years ago. I now have a 67 to restore in the garage and a 15 year old that is looking forward to driving/inheriting it! |

Replace "Ghia" with any beloved two-door in the same ad for the past 40 years:
For sale: 19xx Corvette, Trans Am, Camaro, Beetle, C10 Pickup, Javelin, BMW 2002, Charger...
They're always the same: "Baby forces sale". _________________ West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) |

To bring it more up to date, for the anticipated arrival of my newest grandson, the beloved 2 door Scion TC was ditched for a more baby friendly 4 door VW Passat by my Son In Law.

Do you think VW will ever build a 2-door with suicide doors? Similar to the Mini "clubman". Get most of the fun/weight of the 2-door but have just enough access to get that baby carrier in the back seat. |

My wife will absolutely not allow our 6 year old son in the Ghia, even with booster and seat belt, not going to happen. But then when I told her that I got an offer on the Ghia that was very attractive, she said no way, you are keeping that Ghia! Marriage is complex, it's what keeps it interesting. |

We have a new baby, but my Ghia is staying unless I have to eat bread for dinner! I do not plan on taking her in the Ghia though until she grows up. A modern car seat will not fit in the back, and the front is a compromise even though there is no airbag. Years ago when we had our first child, we had a Dodge Omni fastback 2+2. The rear seat was not much bigger than the Ghia, and the baby seat would only fit in the middle of the back. However, the main issue is structural safety: I hit a Ford Escort broadside that made an illegal turn, and after a 35mph impact, the engine didn't even stall and I drove it into a gas station. My brother was in an identical car during a head-on collision, with a closing speed of 80mph. The impact was so hard that the engine was crushed and there were no recognizable parts in front of the windshield, but the passenger compartment was unaffected and the doors clicked shut normally. I don't think an 80mph impact in a Ghia would leave the passenger space intact. Just something to think about with a baby in the car.

Funny how your perspective changes post kids. Pre kids I probably would have agreed with this.
At the speed I'm moving with restoring my wife's ghia I won't need to worry about having kids in the car!

This is probably a touchy subject for most. Fact is our 50-75 year old designed air-cooleds are not as safe as even the average modern car. NO 1930s design is. For the most part, our grandparents & parents & even us survived. Unfortunately conditions on the roads have changed over time with the worst thing probably being the shear number of other cars we share the road with. Living in a Uber-large metro area usually means it's not a matter of if, but when, you will be involved in an auto accident, especially if you drive often or far. Some thought I was crazy when a year after my son was born I narrowed my family's driving options to just my 1970 Ghia. We fitted his child seat in the middle of the rear seat & strapped it in with mounts & belts that I had to ad to the Ghia. This was my only (running) car for over a year. He rode back there for a few more years till I took it of the road. He's about to turn 7, is still in a booster seat, & i'm not sure how well he would do in the back now. I would not hesitate for him to ride in the front although it is less safe still. Does this make me a bad dad? Perhaps, but don't suggest I dont love my son. I can't /won't live my life (or make him) in a safety bubble. Some people have their kids riding motorcycles younger than my kid, others insist on getting them involved in dangerous sports as soon as they can move at a running pace. I try not to judge their thinking but wouldn't let my kid do that stuff yet.
There are those who are afraid to fly in an airplane but have no problem with getting into an automobile. Fact is they are many, many more times likely to be injured or killed in that car versus the plane.
If we are going to start worrying so much about it then we should never take any loved one for a ride in our (comparative) death traps & really only drive them very sparingly ourselves.
Yes, Babies (wives, girlfriends) may be Ghia/VW killers but we shouldn't let them be. I for one like my link to the simpler past & hope I can pass some of it along to my son while being as safe as is resonable.
