95% of the time all Vanagons are pigs. I think it's a bit disingenuous to specifically call Syncros out. Do you just mean that Syncros are slower than 2wd vans with the same engine? OK. Sure. 21 seconds 0-60 instead of 19? You could street race 2 vanagons next to a police cruiser and they wouldn't even realize you're racing.
I find my Syncro quite enjoyable to drive. For a Vanagon. _________________ '87 Syncro

I've been looking for a Westfalia to finish up my van build with all the interior pieces for a while now. One popped up for $1500, in pretty rough shape on the exterior, and inside doesn't look great (mold on roof of pop-up), almost definitely mouse intrusion. I had kind of decided I would just build my own interior at some point, trying to spec it as close to the OEM cabinets as possible using measurements I found online, but this seems like it might be the better way to go-It's about 60 miles and I'd have to try the ol' license plate swap and attempt my AAA Gold tow (usually not an issue).
Because I don't think I'd get much back selling a gutted Westy with rust and algae on the exterior (even with an engine and transmission) is this worth it? $1500 for an interior minus the back cushion? Plus would be it's a match for my 85 seats (1986). I assume barring any water intrusion on the cabinets they'd be salvageable with a good cleaning. |

Good Lord, right here in Saskatchewan! I've never seen this van around - and there are like 5 Westies in all of Sask. The building architecture and trees look like Northern Sask.
And MotoMaster tires. Yup - very Saskatchewan, run to Canadian Tire and get the cheapest possible tires in the world for your Vanagon. First thing the buyer has to do is throw those in the garbage.
No reserve tho - someone is going to snap it up. Must...fight...urge to bid.....
*Edit* - just saw the username of the seller of this van - really nice guy, AND the 'replacement engine' in this van is MY 2.0 air-cooled engine! That's how few vans there are local up here. Whoever buys this, I have paperwork on that engine, it was a new longblock dealership installed in California in my van back-in-the-day; hopefully he fixed cylinder 3, it was a really strong running engine but valves in #3 were shot which made it a bit of a dog.

luv me a slow ride!
No, I never drove one. But I did drive a 2.0 over I70 mountain passes and will not do that again in this lifetime. |
Rather than 'drive' my 2.1 WBX along I70 through the Eisenhower Tunnel, I might suggest that I 'coaxed' my 2.1 over the pass in the shoulder doing 20-25 MPH with the hazards on. It was this experience that reinforced my need for additional HP support if I was to repeat this type of road trip, hence the Subie swap. |
Done that I70 high passes in Colorado several times, worst ever top speed was 38mph. this in a moderately loaded 2.1, 1991 4 speed tin top. Always pretty glorious on flat land I could go 92mph indicated (with correct tires) any day, any time. Not great, but not throwing the baby away with the bath water.
I'd wonder if something was wrong and not making rated power? _________________ Al Brase

Everybody wants a Syncro? Well they are great if you NEED 4 wd, but the other 95 of the time they are PIGS. I know a lot of people that had them new and were less than thrilled.....
But a Syncro is a pig 95% of the time. As a driver. |
I would have to strenuously differ with that opinion.
Have you ever owned one? |
No, never owned a Syncro. I have logged about 600,000 miles in Vanagons, tho. I think 8 different ones.
Easily my favorites are the AIR COOLED ONES. Love my July 1979 built Westy. Love the lightness of the handling.
I MIGHT be defining PIG somewhat differently from others.
Air cooled Vanagons remind me very much of my early 911 how they feel driving. Though with half the plug wires pulled! _________________ Al Brase

This is super interesting on BAT, never seen the interior, debate if it's original or not, I've never seen it but damn cool. Even cooler if OEM.

It's a super-sweet interior. Here's the VW brochure for it...
