Our 1989 Vanagon 2.1 L finally passed California smog inspection after flunking last month. All it took was a new catalytic converter. Just under $1000.

Congrats. I was wondering about California. Are they imposing emissions that the Vanagon would not have had to meet when new. In those days, we measured HC and CO before the cat. I recall the manual only lists CO for adjusting. Just curious.

Just the original emissions.

The test now days in much of california is considerably more stringent than it was years ago for the vanagon. It is now much more difficult to pass.

You should have a new oxygen sensor to go with the new catalyst. as a defective, or what is known as a "lazy" sensor can lead to damage of that pricey catalyst. Passing the test does not assure the sensor is at optimal performance, and less than optimal can quickly ruin a new catalyst. Protect that $1000 catalyst, get a new sensor often.

It's still the original specification emissions they test for. They also test the gas system for zero venting (they block off the evap crap) by fitting an adapter instead of the gas cap and then pressurise the system to a few psi and wait for some minutes - there must be no loss of pressure. The whole test for the van takes quite a long time, and costs way more than a modern sedan. Sad
