If that were mine I would start by sanding that paint to see just how bad it`s gonna be. I would remove the engine first to create better access. But thats me. You may be surprised at just how bad it isn`t, but then again you may open up a whole can of worms you never anticipated. Good luck and just don`t be in a rush. I would open one side at a time. That way I can always change my mind if I don`t like what I see and just drive it as is. They are not all show cars. Good luck and try to have some fun. Smile Oh... I see now that it looks like the engine is out. And it don`t look too bad. But then again I am a Californian.

I have the engine out and have spot blasted the area it's not that much worse. I am just confused with where i would cut and weld where it meets with the rear valance Sad Im just kinda of stumped at this moment. never have done a rear corner on a bus before. I think my plan of attack it to cut right below the mounting bolt for the taillight and up along the side. something like this

but the other side is going to have to wait untill I get the rear wheel arch because of this

Yea my bus is a rust bucket Laughing But it means alot to me, I wouldn't get rid of it for anything.

My corners are far worse: wrecked and twisted by previous owner and hack body man. I wanna say I saw replacement corner panels on Bus Boy's site, but they're only 15 inches tall from bottom. The other idea I have is to further explore the rust's extent and contemplate fabrication from raw sheet metal if you have access to a good metal shop; which is looking to be my only option.

General rule is don't start cutting out big chunks until you have a repair panel in your hand. It's hard to say exactly where to cut as a lot depends on how solid (or not) the metal work is at your intended 'join' until you start cutting. That corner panel is available new still, although i don't know what availability is like where you are.

http://www.justkampers.com/shop/t2-bay-window/orig...10680.html

Price is good for what you're getting, works out more cost-effective in terms of time than the usual lower corner repair panel and some homemade patches Wink

now my plan of attack is to remove the battery tray tomorrow where it is spot welded to the side and put some solid metal there so i can weld my tray in, then weld the corner in and fix the area that is next to the seam.

Here is the replacement panels I am working with.

VW battery trays (had the Klokkerholm sent that garbage back)

Where did you get those replacement panels? I thought they didnt make those for late bays....or if they did they were cheap and required a bit of persuading to get to fit.

Hi,
Thanks for posting your repair. This is a job I will need to be tackling soon. I was wondering how you went about marking out where you need to cut, seeing as the bus is neither level or square.

Also, I see that you stayed away from the seam towards the wheel arch.
Did you cut down the bus depot corner, or is this as far as it goes?

Thanks

I just did a similar repair on my bus after the PO repaired a bent frame section with bondo.

I was lucky enough to purchase an entire late westy for $100 from a local VW shop to use as a panel donor. Apparently someone cut the bus in half and thought they could sell it as scrap metal without a title.

Can I ask you how long it took you to replace? I've just had both corners and d posts replaced and have received a bill of $17,000. $5900 was parts the rest labour I'm thinking this is pretty extreme and wanted to find out how long it would have actually taken
thanks
