Searched a bit and all I can find are Beetle and other air-cooled visors. I have been thinking about making one myself but it would probably have to be steel and not nearly as nice as this: http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270933350643
(Yeah it's an ebay auction, it's the only place in the world I can find one listed)
Looks like this!
Again, image taken from ebay.uk
I might have to wait to see if my brother will bring me back one or several when he returns someday. Or maybe I have to go visit him and get them myself...
Anyone ever see any in United States? Where can I buy one? _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

They clamp on to the rain channel like a roof rack, no holes.
I would think twice about using these things. The last think a flying brick needs is another wind noise, and these thing are NOISEY. Better IMHO to put a tint band at the top of your screen. Greg |

The ones that i have found that are vanagon specific call for 6 screws to install them. Ones that clamp on are almost guaranteed to fly off at speed |

I don't mind screwing them on, nature has put more holes in my vanagon then I ever will...
Noise at speed? Well that's all relative I guess, I still drive a big gold brick and it's not going to see above 65mph much. I will be doing the tint as well.
Most of my traveling will be done in the desert, about 3-4 hour drive from my house. I think the Australians were on to something with these, plus I think it just looks awesome.
Thanks for the links! It will be a little while before I can get one but I will definitely add lots of pictures. I can hardly find any of these visors on vanagons. I even browsed the watercooled.au forum and not much came up. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

I had one of those on my 71 when I lived over there.
It was screwed on at the sides and had a brace in the center screwed to the roof above the windshield..it sat about 2inches ahead of the van at the trailing edge...no wind noise at all and very sturdy.
One of the mods we all did was to roll it length-ways to create a reversed airfoil shape, most of the smaller tropical bugs would be wisked up and over the windshield, when night driveing.
They also sell a lower version to use as a rock deflector, when driving in the outback...highly recomended |

A visor definitely makes the van cooler. I mean jeezus, look what it did to mine!

Consider a darker tint strip on the top 4-5 inches of windshield. Helps take a lot of blaring sun from the front. Most tint shops would install for less than $40. _________________ 2WD 86 Westy

I think, if you buy two of them, the second can be flipped and used as a lower rock guard... _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ
