Got a 64 type KG that I think is having some vacuum issues (I can put my foot on the floor and maybe get 20mph out her. I hope it's just the hose, which I've ordered but just in case it's the vacuum canister, I started looking up availability. The distributor is not the original (0 231 150 001) which I plan to get at some point. The dizzy in there now is 0 231 147 006 which is the following year's original equipment. The vacuum can is Bosch 07 016 and they are next to impossible to find. My questions are if I go with the 07 017, which has a total advance of 25 degrees vs the 19 from the 07 016, 1) will it work and 2) could it damage anything? Any advice greatly appreciated.

What is your engine number, and what carb are you running? With the distributor a known exchange, we can't assume anything else is 100% stock, either. It is vital that you match the carb and distributor. |

Carbs are 32 pdsit solex 2 and 3, vin number is 0341659. Last 4 digits on engine code are 1322 (too dark to see the other numbers) but if my memory serves me the first digit is 4. I'll check it out in daylight when I have time to date the air cleaner off and clean the top of the case. I have it on Lee Hedges authority that the numbers are matching. The best I can tell is that the only two things on the engine that are not original are the fuel pump and the dizzy.
Thanks,

You might try asking Pedro or Jason if either of them know where to find the correct 64 S distributor. It's possible that Glenn has one, or might know where to find one. Another option would be looking thru the Samba classifieds or even E-bay. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The engine is a 1500 and the hesitation has been going on for a while. I replaced the fuel lines under the hood because one of them was leaking and that seemed to help a bit. Also installed an online fuel filter. It may be just as simple as the vacuum hose but I always like to be prepared for the worst. As far as the correct distributor is concerned, the correct one seems to be a museum piece based on how infrequently they come up for sale and how expensive they are. |

Being a 'one year only' part drives up the price - there are actually several in the classifieds right now (one of those ads is mine) - and contrary to 'popular belief', the vac can is the only 'hard to find part' on the distributor. The rotor, points, condenser and cap are not hard to find or expensive.
The ZV/JCU 4R3 is a great distributor and is one of the reasons I prefer the 64 model year for Type 3. |

Not sure if I should start a new thread but it appears the vacuum canister is fine. I got some new hose and tested it out by taking the distributor cap off and sucking on the hose. It moves the arm with ease. I then used my pressure/vacuum tester setting it up as notated on the instructions using the "T" connection between the carb and the vacuum canister while running - nothing. Where's the next place to look for a leak - the gasket under the carb? Also, I have a carb rebuild kit (actually 2) and since I've never rebuilt a carb, any advice would be greatly appreciated. I thought it'd be the smart thing to do since I had the carb off the motor. |

I don't see the needle move at all. I've been reading and it appears that I have the 2nd generation 32 pdsit's with the 2 tubes in the carb throat. |

Chased down part of the problem. Hoses from balance pipe to manifolds were loose. However, when I took off the air cleaner to address that issue, I noticed 1) that the right hand carb (1 and 2 cylinder side) seemed to be gunked up with some yellowish stuff and that the tin underneath and the intake manifold had some of what is probably the same stuff on them. In addition, once I put clamps on the hoses connecting the balance pipe to the manifolds, it started fine and idled fine. The vacuum was very low when I rev'd the engine up. The other curious thing was that the intake manifold over the 1 and 2 cylinders seemed to be sweating (like it was very cold). Anyone ever seen this? |
