I recently came across this ad (and now own a paper copy) - and it got me thinking - has anyone ever installed a monster Type IV (like Fat Performance) in a Vanagon? Could be a really fun van!

If you poke around, you will find that practically every kind of engine you can think of has been put in a Vanagon. I love where that ad brags "you can glide up to a steady 55mph in relative peace and quiet."

I understand the Porsche 912 had the same engine as the original T3 van.

Not quite sure how C&D came to the conclusion that an AC Vanagon was the Porsche of vans, except that it lacked a radiator. Wasn't the WBX created created to make that "glide up to 55" happen a little sooner?

In any case, I talked to a guy at BBB that had 1980 Westy with a Porsche 911 engine in it. Pretty sweet.

Most 912s used a 1,600cc engine, but I do think the last version of it -- along with the 914/4 -- used a 2-liter version.

I suspect the Vanagon version may have been de-tuned or re-worked for the heavier bus, but that part's a guess.

The 1976 912E used a 2.0 type 4 motor, as did the last run of 914's in the same year.

Peace

If I'm dropping a Porsche engine in, I'm following Porsche's own lead:

If they'd said "The 917/30 of vans," my bladder would immediately fail.

That quote came from a Car and Driver magazine road test and it referred to the fully independent suspension's handling, not acceleration. And remember, we had the 55 MPH National Speed Limit to contend with, so getting up to 55 was every bit the thrill you'd expect. The competition was not the Sienna, the Caravan, the Town & Country, or anything else like that. They did not exist yet. It was another, older VW or a full-size van from Ford, Chevy or Dodge. Tough competition in the handling department.

In the Porsche context, "handling" is barely less comical, however. Wink

Although, despite the driver's clearly-errant use of an apex, there's this -- despite my struggle to accept the lineage of Clark > Villeneuve > Senna > Schumacher > Vanagon:

Perception. Marketing. Smoke and mirrors.

Well done, Campism!

Is the "smoke" part related to head seal failure?

If they only had their ducks in a row and contracted w/Audi vs Puch for the AWD Vanagons.

a nice factory quattro with the 5cyl in the back would have been a better performer & seller. plus keeping the MFG $$ in the family vs an outside party.
with upgrades/options of a 5cyl turbo and 3b 20v turbo for the 91 LLE
they would have had to make a stronger transaxle Wink
