I am trying to diagnose my issue with having no brake lights in my 1975 Fuel Injected Bay-Window Bus. Just take a look at this wiring for the rear tail light, does not look factory at all. Now I did notice a loose wire on the double connection but with or without that connected, brake lights will still not turn on. Fuses under the dash appear OK. The strange black box seems to be connected to the turn signals. I have done some forum site searches and came across this thread: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=791868 but I have not found any examples of this strange turn signal setup.

Well the brown and black wires both on the same turn signal socket terminals isn't a good start. The mystery box looks like some sort of trailer adapter, your best option is to remove it, and pull all the wires off both fixtures so they can be put back in thier correct spots.
Do you have the key on when testing for brake lights? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

That looks/is like a box for trailer wiring. _________________ What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it is all about?
