Been lurking here for years and now the time has come to explain what we have been up to.
My son came to me 5 years ago and says he wants to rebuild a VW..
Long story short is I show him a couple pictures of a Karman Ghia and he falls in love with them... Nearly 3 weeks later he finds a 1962 coupe that the owner started to work on including purchasing nearly every part including pans and all the rubber for the car. The body was decent but the pans were swiss cheese. Motor was nearly new and the car ran very strong. We paid the gentleman 3,000 dollars and started a project.
After a complete tear down mostly by my son and pan replacement by the two of us. The project stalled when my son again came home and notified me he would be serving his country as a US Navy Airman for 4 years.
Here we are 4 years later after my son has been discharged from the Navy and the project starts again. We will try to keep you up to date as the build progress goes forward...
Pictures of the day we picked it up

So far we have learned don't ever sandblast one of these cars... Warped it pretty bad... Good thing we have a body shop owner in the family.. Oh well you live and learn. Next one we will try the dip tank method or maybe soda blast

We have skipped allot of the steps that were taken to get the car to this point but I am sure most have seen how this is all really done. The sandblasting really left the car in good shape to accept the epoxy primer that was then laid on.
The car then spent the next two years having the body work done by a relative. We all know that means it was put on the back burner until they felt like getting around to it... LOL
While the body was off getting it's work done we went to town on the pan and chassis
After installing tghe pans we painted and prepped all of the running gear and re-installed most everything with new stainless steel hardware
Bending new brake lines throughout the car was easy.

Trying to take as many pictures as possible but some days we just get going and don't think of the pics while we are deep into the car.
The fun part of wiring..
I always knew the windows and doors would be tough on this car... Oh well we are working through the difficulties and getting them done.
BTW every part is taken completely apart, cleaned, painted and reassembled. sometimes we do it exactly as the factory shows them or we make it up on our own and think we have a better solution for the problem at hand. So to say the least this is not a perfect ground up restoration with exact and perfectly detailed parts. This is just the way we like doing it and are having a great time while we go. |

More work everyday... Or we just like to call it fun. LOL
Decided after I ran all the wires to the headlights to just go ahead and finish the headlight install
Added a few more pics to this thread and will try to keep it up to date .
More To Come!

I like the color. It looks to be a metalic gray on my PC.
Upgrading the electrics w/modern fuses is a good step also.
Nice project, looking forward to see how you finish the interior

The color is the same as his moms Corvette. 2003 C-5 convertible in Spiral Gray metallic..
We liked it so much on the Vette we decided it was a good choice for the Ghia.
The fuse box came from Watsons wiring kit... We like it allot as it definately has advantages over the factory system that was pretty well butchered up when we got the car..
Yes the interior will be a bit longer process than we first anticipated. neither one of us likes things that are inexpensive so we will need to piece that together a little at a time. |

| Your Ghia will look great when done! Is the roof painted a solid, non-metallic black? I've done the same wheel treatment on my '64 Ghia coupe with 4.5 and 5.5' chromies. What tire size do you have in back? Have you decided on an interior color? |

The interior is going to be a sort of play on gray and black two tone..
We like the mohair headliner and thats about all we have agreed on so far... LOL. The rest will be stock seats in the front and in the back with a two tone in cloth and a salt and peper type of carpet....
The tires are 135 front 195 rear with 4.5 and 5.5 chromies
The roof is painted solid black............ |

Going to use the engine that came with the car (1914cc) with some slight modifications we have made.
Interior : It's funny you ask. We had a family meeting last night and decided yet again to go in a direction toward Gray materials.
I might as well ask here.
I was looking at SEWFINE'S website and wondering if they are good qualilty or not? Does anyone have any experience with them? |

With regards to the interior, Sewfine has excellent and prompt service, Carol is great to work with and is very knowledgeable. However, there are things they can and cannot do when it comes to upholstery work. When it comes to custom designs and things, then the sky's the limit, but if you want to have more of a stock, vintage result, with correct fabrics and vinyls, they are lacking in my opinion.
I hate to say it because my experience with West Coast Classic was horrendous, but their product is the best. IF you're able to get Lenny on the phone, you have about 15 seconds to speak your peace before he hangs up on you. I ordered my complete interior from him, less carpet, and his "2-3 week estimate" took over 5 months. And that was with me calling him every other week reminding him about my job. But if you take a look at my profile pictures, you'll see how great their work is. You just have to be willing to wait, unless you're lucky and he get's it done on time by some miracle or unless you live in the area and can stop in the shop and say hey what's going on? He does correct uphostery work, using the correct materials. I'm very happy with the end product, just a major frustrating headache working with him.

Does anyone know where i can find a mirror like this one...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120889285359?_trksid=p3984...mp;vxp=mtr
Funny part is that is my mirror i sent to this guy nearly 2 years ago to have refurbished along with a set of pop out window latches. (guess he thought I would forget about it)
he refuses to reply to any of my requests for reimbursement or replacement of the parts and is now selling them on Ebay like a POS dirt bag that he is.
He goes by the name of Ivan Baustida at www.karmannghias.com
Anyways i was wondering if anyone knew of a place I could get some window latches and a nice rear view mirror at?
Thanks in advance.
Can't wait to see my stolen mirror in another car _________________ Scott
