Does anyone recommend electronic ignitions as opposed to standard? _________________ I learn so much in here, sometimes it makes my head hurt.

Do it. It will make tune-ups a cinch, get you a little better mileage, better starts in the morning and more power up in the higher rpm range and a smoother throttle and idle. It's a win win situation when you install a Pertronix. $60 at RMMW. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

Being the Original Volkswagen Ostrich With His Head In The Sand that I am, I suggest original Bosch ignition system from the coil to the plugs if you are running a mild-to-stock engine. It cannot strand you. There isn't a damn thing in a points/condensor set up that can prevent you from getting to where you going, be it Honduras or Point Barrow Alaska, that ten minutes of fiddling can't cure. Meanwhile, when my electronic ignition BMW decides to fritz, I'm done. Sitting beside the road. Go find a DME coil pack in Winnie Texas? But if I am in my VW, grab a condensor out of the glove box, file the points with a nail file, set the gap with a pack of matches, I'm outta there.

colin siad it good, but if you absolutely want electronic ignition, DO NOT BUY THE EMPI BRAND. i bought three non of them worked. and i couldnt not return them because the fuckers said I burned them up, ya right. so guess what I have in ther now? Points and it works fine.

Ditto. Carry the spare parts no matter what you have installed.
"Points" or the Kettering ignition was invented before the first world war. I trust Bosch quality (maybe you should check where those parts are actually coming from these days: it ain't Germany) but I think I prefer something more modern.
Pertronix has been around for a long time has a good reuptation and a 30 month warranty. You take your chances with the rest it seems. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

[email protected] is right. On a long trip down the I5, the distributor in our bus quit on us (along with many other things). Fortunatly, we keep spare points, condenser ect with us, and in 15 minutes after bascally rebuilding our distributor, we were back on the road. The rocker arms took a little more beating and the carbs were shook to hell, but the ignition worked fine after that.

So it sounds like no one is really against the petronix electronic ignition system but some still like and will most always use and rely on the standard bosch points.
Maybe I should try it, and see how it feels. I will like you suggested, keep my spare parts and keep bussin.
Thanks Yall
