If you look at the second image it shows that the rod is passing thru the hole closer to the engine case. Best way to remember is "Into the inner (closer to the case) hole".

I seem to remember a thread that discussed how important that little tin square with the slot in it is. Many heads don't come with it installed.

Gordo.

For the linkage spring washer N 23 623 1, you can use instead the earlier 211 259 283.

The folded over clip is available. Current part number is N0126452.

It's a Porsche part now.

I got mine from VW Heritiage in the UK, but a US example is http://www.rmeuropean.com/Products/N0126452-MFG100.aspx

I've also seen used ones for sale right here on the site and they are typically still good. You can tell by viewing them if they have been abused.

Getting ready to load my shroud with the rod going down the correct hole and can't find any of the clips or external spring washers: all those links are deadends.

My dad worked on B-17s in WWII and left me a pile of aircraft anti-rattle fasteners. I found this compression nut and die-ed my rod to 8-32 for the nut.

Threaded it just far enough that it won't bind.

There's little clearance so I'm going to grind the hex part down to the smallest I can go.

The compression side has cuts so I have to be careful not to go all the way into them but I have more nuts just in case.

The hex side has a lot of meat so I'm hopeful. Freakin' micro-surgery, sheesh.

We aren't allowed to bend the spring on the flap farther away from the rivet as it would alter the factory distance the rod goes down, right?

Correct, but it should be about a Popsicle stick width between the rod arm end and the riveted base of the arm.

Those compression rings are sold at Ace in the nut and bolt section. I buy the real small ones for carb linkages and once on, won't come off without a lot of effort.

Good deal Barry. I've found workable substitutes or exact replacements for the clips at the local hardware store in the past.

Thanks guys; maybe next go-around. I already threaded it and I think that negates using the clip.

All ready to drop on the engine assembly now. Turns out not much material had to be removed as the flaps return spring keeps the rod in the pulled-off-the-Popsickle-width area farther than I thought.

I know this is minuscule but it's my first thermostat and flaps.

That arm needs to be bent a bit more than that image.

That arm needs to be bent a bit more than that image.

The spring "arm" or rod "arm"?
If it's the spring "arm", bent closer to the rivet or farther away?
If spring "arm" how do I bend it?
The flaps are NOS and never been used or dropped.

There is lots of slop travel with the rod inside the spring. The nut hits if I let it fall towards the rivet.

The arm in the image that holds the top of the thermostat rod. Arm is not designed to be a spring, but to allow some flex as needed.

As for it being new, it could have been bent when a pile of those was dumped on it.

Man, great thread. Now I'm totally conflicted if I should install flaps on my bus. They were missing on my bus when I bought it way back. Living in Houston, it doesn't really get cold out here so I figured they applied even less to me.

Should I bother hunting down some and in stalling them where we only know warm to scalding hot weather??

If I should hunt down some, where???

I'm in Phoenix and all my VW's are running thermostats and flaps. The flaps direct the air to the heads correctly when they are open as well.

As to where to locate? Check the classifieds on this site. There's always tons for sale along with ebay.

If it never gets below 150F where you drive, or if you are running Mexi FI, then you do not need the flaps.

CLASSIFIEDS, see button at upper left.

It finally came time to fabricate my thermostat flaps' connecting link.

On a regular doghouse with aluminum oil cooler the connecting link clears the bottom of the oil cooler as one flat bar as in this photo by Altewagen.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Not so easy with a Puma shroud on a bus engine using the steel oil cooler which I'm using. The connecting link has to go around the offset adapter.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Forever I've searched to no avail for this: (photo by danielsan)
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Plus, I have no idea what the missing parts look like. So, I decided if you guys can bring back a bus from particles of rust I can at least make this piece cut and pasted from two connecting links.

I temporarily fit the shroud. The link collides with the adapter so I marked how much it needed to travel also figuring it would hit the little case nub that rises up at the center seam.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then the link got gut off so I could figure out how much to make the driver side step away to connect and clear that side.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Using the step from another connecting link I figured the distance required and spot welded it to the original step.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The added step gave enough extra length that only a jog was required to be bent at the case seam area.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Originally the driver side was going to kant upward so the connecting link would rise up and over the seam area to miss the case nub protrusion but I accidently taped it together straight.

Oh well, guess a trial fit is in order. The some weirdass reason the cockeyed doglegged piece fit perfect, whoa! And to boot it dropped down and below even with case and with bellhousing bolt clearance as if it were factory. Sheesh, that never happens.

Spot welded and finish fit.

This POS someone sold me as a Puma connecting link.

Steel oil cooler Puma connecting link my version.

Posted up this thread addition while the paint was drying.

Still looking for a reliable place to buy these clips as pictured in
flemcadiddlehopper's photo so I can finish.
