|
|
I have a 1965 Notchback that is pretty much a rolling shell and is either missing or has body parts that need to be replaced. I am looking at purchasing a parts car but dont know what would be the best years to look for. I need interior pieces as well so should I only be looking at Fastback models? I can get a set of doors off of a 1970s squareback, I know the hinges are different but I plan on using custom hinges but are they the same size? This is all new to me as this is mt first T3. |

If you want to use period correct parts, you need to find a 64 or 65-but again, this depends on the parts you seek because some remained the same for a few 'changes' and some were 1-2 year only parts.
Period correct interior parts would most come from 64/65 model years unless you're not doing a 'correct' car. |

Thank you for the responce, I appreciate any information I can get. Unfortunately my Notchback is beyond a correct restoration as most of the orginal parts are missing or need replacing. I plan on doing a mild "resto-custom" with exterior as close to original in appearance even if not exactly correct and the interior and drivetrain updated for more comfort and safety. I plan on driving daily when finished and just want to be able to enjoy it. Thank you again for your help and knowledge. |

For body parts, you're kind of limited to Notch only pieces, except for the front fenders and hood. But, they need to be 69 and earlier parts. The doors can be from a 65 and earlier Square, or Notch, but like mentioned above, rear fenders are Notch only (same with the rear trunk lid).
For interior pieces, since you're not doing a resto, you can use the door panels from any T-3, except a T-34 Ghia. The rear seat is either Notch ot Fastback only, as are the rear door cards. Or, you can get a door panel kit from J-Bugs ( www.jbugs.com ).
My 64 Notch is kind of a resto-custom, in that externally (other than the color) it looks mostly stock (shaved bumper uprights), but inside is where I went with later style door panels, and eliminated the rear side armrests and ash trays. Mine's also running an IRS rear suspension, later 3.88 trans, and dual carbs, along with disc brakes up front (on 4 lugs all around). I've also got an older set of Western rims on it with 195-60-15's up front, and 205-65-15's in the rear, with a 2 inner spline drop up front, and 40 year sag in the rear. The car is a nice cruiser, for either short hops, or long drives. You can search my gallery for pics of it. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thank you for the info.. that helps me alot. I now thinking that I am better off buying the parts I need seperate when I can get them rather than an entire parts car for a few pieces. I glad that I was able to ask people who know more than me so I dont end up wasting alot of time and money. I still have alot of my old Bug stuff so will be using what I can from that for the engine and such and then sell or trade the rest for pieces I need for the Notchback. |

Yeah, that might be the best way to go, as you won't be stuck trying to get rid of a parts car later on (or having it take up space needed for something else). If you can hook up with someone who has just what you need, it might be cheaper in the long run to go that route.
When I got mine, the inside was basically toast, with mostly bare metal inside. As a result, I just bought a couple of interior kits as I went along on it. Same thing with the outside, as ALL of the window seals were shot (baked hard as a rock), and both trunks and the door seals were bad too. Buying ALL of the rubber stuff is where the cost really was. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I have been trying to locate pan halves like the sell for bugs but the only ones I can find are either used or out of my price range right now. I was told that Ghia panb halves will work and cost aot less. Has anyone ever tried or heard of doing this? Thanks for all the help and info |

I've got Ghia pans in my notch. The fab to get them to fit made the price go up substantially. Just get Type 3 pans and be done with it. _________________

ok, thanks for letting me know. I wasnt sure if would be worth it or not. Sounds like will be keeping an eye out for pan halves as wel as rest of parts going to take to get my notch solid again. Might take alittle longer than had planned but will be worth it to save this car. |

Yup, I've used a couple of sets from Neil. They're still good solid metal, and well worth picking them up.
Of course, this was before Gerson started offering their's for sale. From what I've seen and heard, the quality is great, and the metal thickness is spot on (ghia pan halfs are thinner). I've talked to a few people that used ghia pans in the past, and it's a lot of extra work, to make then fit a t-3. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

It looks like the pan halves from Klassic Fab are the way to go... thanks for letting me know about them. I had only seen the used pans from EIS before and the new ones are actually alittle cheaper. I wish they made more repro parts for our cars. I quess that what makes them special though too. Thanks again for the help. |
