Hey all,
Just bought my first Bus, a 1968 Neptune Blue Westfalia. I sold my 68 squareback to buy the bus. I bought her from the grandson of the original owner here in Southern California. She's got a small bit of rust below the windshield and on the lower nose, but nothing too terrible. The bus has the original Westy interior and is just missing the curtains, mosquito net and child cot. Otherwise, the interior is complete and in great shape. The front seats need new covers and padding, but they are the original blue basketweave vinyl.
The bus has original paint that is in really good shape. The only things she needs immediately are new front and rear windshield seals and a new pop-top canvas. She runs and drives great, all the electrical works. The previous owner was in film school at USC and he painted some of the interior and a logo on the sliding door with acrylic paint. I plan on cleaning off all the paint on the interior and buffing the original paint back to a shine. The pop top will be cleaned this week and she should be lookin' good. I have all the original import and purchase paperwork from VW Canada as well. The original owner was a teacher in London, bought the bus there and had it shipped to Canada, then California. I'm stoked!
Here's the only picture I have now, but I will post lots more pictures tomorrow. I'm happy to have joined the baywindow community!

Thanks! Here's some photos from his ad. A before and after of what he did to the interior. The bandana covers over the seats were just stapeled on, I've already removed them. The acrylic paint will be coming off this week with some soapy water.
before (when he first got the bus):
and after (how it looks now):
I plan on getting the interior dialed ASAP. The front seats need to be recovered and are blue basketweave. Do you guys know of a good site to order the blue vinyl covers? I checked ISP west and they are $199, it didn't look like TMI had blue basketweave available for the bucket seats. _________________ '67 Squareback

I plan on keeping it for now, but might remove it later to have my surf company's logo added by a sign writer on the side.
Just placed a big busdepot order to get this thing camp ready! _________________ '67 Squareback

Very cool bus and story!
I hope all that interior paint washes of the laminate. _________________ 1976 Westy

Thanks! I started cleaning the paint off yesterday. It was coming off by just scratching it with my fingernail, so I'm feeling pretty confident about it. I'll post some more pictures this afternoon if its not raining. _________________ '67 Squareback

Chainsaw. When in doubt, the first tool you should always look to should be the chainsaw. _________________ 1969 Squareback, 1776cc

Looking good
Be prepared for rust when you pull the front and back window seals.

There's a little bit in the front that I can already see but that seems to be the worst of it. Two quarter sized holes in the passenger floor as well. Doesn't look like anything too major. _________________ '67 Squareback

they really are, they just need a good cleaning. I removed the remaining paisley covers off the stock upholstery last night and wiped down the vinyl with simple green. Everything cleaned up really nice. Now to start removing the hippie paint! _________________ '67 Squareback

Well the parts have started to flow in to get this bus cleaned up and camping ready. All the paint has been removed from the wardrobe/closet and the top has been scrubbed clean. Also picked up a new sliding door panel and front/rear headliner panels.
This week will bring front & rear windshield seals, new engine seal, rear stationary window seals, new pop top, pop top seals and hold downs, white emblem, rear emblem and some buffing time. Lots of work to do in the near future! _________________ '67 Squareback

So I removed the front headliner and dome light assembly last night to prepare to install my new headliner and noticed something strange. My headliner has a backing panel where the dome light is, and the dome light is too small for the new headliner. The old headliner has a thin metal plate with a smaller hole in it for the dome light to fit in. Do I have a dome light off a different car?
here's my dome light. It measures ~4.5" from end to end.
and here's my original headliner with the backing plate.
Do i have the wrong year dome light? _________________ '67 Squareback
