I would like to put an oil filter on my Dune buggy with a 1600 Single port, from what I have read there is a Early model and a Late Model, and the Cam gears are different,

My Brother has a New pump with the oil filter mount, if I tear my engine down and find that the pumps are different, is it possible to just change the filter mount and use my original pump ?

No... the oil pumps are different between stock and one with a filter.

There's dished and flat cams so you need the right pump to match.

After doing some research on changing the oil pump to a filter type. I was told that if the new pump, pumps too much pressure the oil will not go through the cooler, Is this true and how can I tell if it's bypassing the oil cooler ?

Get a 26mm pump and not a oversized 30mm pump.

The stock pump is 26mm.

I'm likely wrong, as usual - but don't all the VWs have high pressure relief valves (2 on the later models) that regulate oil to bypass the oil cooler if the oil pressure is too high, like when cold and before the oil has warmed up (when the viscosity becomes less) ? In other words, to the VW engineers, too much pressure meant that the engine/oil temperature was too cold.

I've been running a CB Maxi2 oil pump/filter combination for over 30 years on my 1835cc engine; so old it says Claude's Buggies !!!

My CB Maxi2 pump (described above) has 26mm gears. I know because when I changed to a dished camshaft, I bought a 26mm "typical" oil pump and used its gear with the shaft in my Maxi2.

For a older engine it is.
