That's a drag. I hope you have a speedy recovery. Chances are though that whoever took it knew what they were taking unfortunately. Hopefully you had adequate insurance coverage. Keep your eyes peeled on CL and kijiji. Some of these low end crooks are pretty simple and will offer up their wares publicly. |

Not necessarily. Couple years ago I had vehicle break-in at my shop. It was a client's car that had been sitting here for months. The engine was seized. But it was an 85 cabrio. My best thinking was that they were looking for a joyride car or just wheels to get home. Forced the client to finally decide what he wanted to do with it. Although , that took a couple months. Anyways, I'm hoping for your sake this is the case. _________________ 85 2wd Doka ABA In progress

Not saying I'm right here and hopefully I'm not but I can't imagine someone stealing a stand out ride like a DoKa unless they knew what it was. They don't exactly "blend in" per se. But given that very fact it may very well turn up. I hope that's the case here. |

Post some pictures and we'll keep an eye out for it here in Calgary. Always looking at any VW. Pictures will help with identification ... And to tune our eye for it!
Best of luck! Hopefully it'll be found soon.
Cheers,

Thankfully the vehicle was found this morning with minor damage (ignition switch) and stereo missing. Thanks to those who posted replies. I am thankful that I had a locking gas cap and little fuel in there. I am a little disappointed that my mechanic left it on the street, where it was stolen from. He has a compound but guys climb over the fence and then have adequate cover to take their time taking stuff from the vehicles parked inside of it.
What sucks is that the stereo was a brand new deck that I had just put in a couple of months ago to replace the one that had been damaged when someone tried to steal it from inside the locked compound of my mechanic. _________________ 1998 T4 Caravelle 2.5 Tdi

What a relief to get it back.

Glad you got it back! Sounds like your mechanic needs to invest in a Rottweiler or two... _________________ _____________________

Does not sound like time for a new mechanic.
What is needed is a stereo with removable face plate. And actually remove it when not in use or at service.
Add some theft deterrents.
This last theft could have been short circuited.
You are lucky this time. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

WOW! That was quick! You're super lucky. An ignition switch and stereo are very minor and certainly much less stress than fighting with your insurance company for months over vehicle value.
Congrats! |

Totally agree with this. It could just as easily be stolen at a parking lot, your house, work, etc. I try to keep all the valuable client cars in the shop overnight . I also work weird hours sometimes. I hope that throws off some people who might be keeping an eye on my place. If a thief wants your van , its gone. Nothing you can do about it. So being pro-active, makes it more likely they'll find an easier target. After all ,thieves are lazy, if they weren't they have a job and actually contribute something to society. _________________ 85 2wd Doka ABA In progress

im wonder if a car cover will prevent thief or joyride? Seems like its a bit more work for a thief to cut open a car cover, remove it and hope to find some nice stuff under the cover? But our van is kinda tall and putting a cover on must be a chore. _________________ 1980 2.8LV6 Fiero ASI/Riviera Vanagon

3x. Plus I always leave the glove box open with iPod cable hanging out, so that they can see that I did not leave the iPod or any valuables behind.
Of course the other thing that could dissuade possible break-ins is that I leave my gym bag in full view - including the used t-shirts, shorts and socks...implies an aroma experience that they may not want to live through...

I did not know there was crime in Canada. Glad you got it back. I had my car stolen when I was a teenager. I got it back a couple days later after paying a towing and impound fee. It was never the same. No finger prints or anything were taken. I asked the police why and they said, " you watch too much tv".
My brother lived in Atlanta and had his vw rabbit was taken 3 different times. The last time, the police caught the guy driving the car. He had a vw key in the ignition, along with a honda and toyota key. The guy did not spend but a half a day in jail. 150 years ago, if you stole someone's horse and got caught, you'd be hung from the tallest tree. |

Time to hook up a second ignition coil (with a kill switch of course)and run the lead to the door handle. The next person that tries to gank your tunes won't want to touch your truck a second time _________________ 91 CARAT |
