Putting together my case after a rebuild. Used case, was align bored and bearings are new.
I put the crank in, made sure crank was fully seated (used split bearing as tool to make sure, as was suggested to me previously - sits in perfectly on journal), put halves together. Torqued 2 bolts by cam, and 6 main bolts to spec, trying to rotate crank by using pulley.
Crank rotates freely part way around, and then gets really tough at the same point every rotation. When its rotating freely, I can grab the rods and move crank a bit horizontally (end play), but when it gets to the point that its difficult to turn, horizontal movement isn't happening either.
Does anyone have any idea what gives here? Been trying several times to assemble my engine, and I can't seem to get it to rotate evenly after I torque the bolts (last time I assembled without the cam, just to make sure the problem was with the crank). _________________ 72 Super - in pieces

| Are you using an aftermarket counterweighted cam? You may have a counterweight hanging up on the case in one spot. I just rebuilt my 1641 and installed a counter weighted cam this time around. Had a similar problem where there was a rough spot in the casting that one counterweight would hang up on enough to make it a little difficult to tuen, but totally elimintated my endplay when I was trying to set it. Once I found it and filed it off smooth no probems. |

Crank and cam are both stock ones that came out of the engine and were polished by the machine shop, didn't change those out for anything aftermarket. _________________ 72 Super - in pieces

As I said before ( twice) you are checking for a warped case... If the case is warped it won't matter if its align bored or not the cutters line up on the existing holes and only make them bigger, they do nothing to line them up........ One more time though because I am patient ... You will take it all back apart which means taking the bearings off and cleaning to look for scuff marks, scuff marks will indicate a pinch point which you don't want .... Clean all the bearing and polish very lightly with fine scotch brite just enough to remove the dull finish... If you are lucky or unlucky depending on how you look at it you may just have a pinched bearing which you'll replace and try again....
You will assemble the crank again and leaving cam out place the case halves togther and begin torquing the six main nuts while checking rotation... If it makes this test you'll be sure the mains are not warped and now you can try putting the cam in ..........Assemble the case halves without the crank just the cam and ck the rotation for binding....Now with everything in crank cam lifters etc... tighten the six biguns again if it still turn your doing great but now the moment of truth when you tighten all the small nuts and studs around the perimeter it may losk up again in which case you'll know the case is warped along the cam bearing area from severe overheating...
This is why using a used case of unknown origin can be risky or even if it was running before but has been overheated a few times you;ll see this situation of warpage...... Everybody will tell you to shit can the engine if this is the case and this is about 1 out of 30 or so you'll find it ...Damn warped case....
We can fix it if you are completly down on bucks we can using some methods I wont go into here...... I'll make you an incredible offer IF you get really down on this thing you pay shipping and I'll supply the labor and build you a short block for free using your parts but this is a onetime just for you offer .... Remember what I said don't get discouraged

Can you believe an offer like this? We never heard back from him. He probably figured we were gonna make a coat or lampshade using his skin. |

This looks interesting. Are these procedures discussed in books? _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Well, it is kind of creepy and weird that you'd bring this thread back up after 9 years?
Maybe the OP was onto something about you!?!?! _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
