I recently had my engine rebuilt. When connecting the engine to the transmission, I was unable to put a nut on one of the engine mount bolts. When I took it off, I realized that the mount bolts were different sizes. Let me explain with pictures.

Here are the two bolts of different lengths.

The one on the right is noticeably shorter by almost a half an inch:

With the transmission flush to the engine, the nut would not go on bc there were only 2 threads for it:

I'm wondering if it's possible that the bolts were accidentally switched when they were rebuilding the engine?

Notice the different thread counts on each one of these:

the longer one has more threads exposed near the engine and is all the way sunk in:

The shorter one is all the way in, but barely has any threads exposed:

Do you think these are backwards?

If not, what do you think is the solution?

Any recommendations will help!

That is a problem. No word from your builder if they messed with that?

What if you were to double nut the shorter one to back it out and replace with a longer stud?

Same part number for both studs. Looking at the parts description they should be 97 mm overall length. You could remove the short one and try reversing it and see if that helps. You could also remove both studs and compare them to each other. Last you could contact the rebuilder and ask for your studs back. You can double nut them to remove them from the case. Good luck.

OE part number is N 014 675 2

it looks like the studs (both) may be too short. you could back out the one that is not long enough (double nut it to do this).

i would measure the nut you are putting on, then back out the stud that far. it looks like you need 5-10mm

I think two size studs were used, long ones for Manual Transmission, short ones for Automatic Transmission. Looks like the shop grabbed the wrong stud. Get the correct ones and move on.

It appears that the first two or three threads on that shorter stud are stripped, which is probably exacerbating the problem. Get a new longer stud

I would look a little closer at the corner of the case I can see in the picture. Is that a repair to the corner?

Alright team - the double nut technique was new to me, but it worked. Pictured here are the two double threaded mounting bolts:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Both of these have a few threads missing. The part with the missing threads actually came from within the engine block - not from the nut.

I'm thinking they both need to be replaced, no?

Yes replace both, aren't they too short anyway? Get the correct studs.

Van-Cafe lists these for $3.95 each and says manual transmission only

Can someone list the size and thread pitch of the nuts that go on theses studs? I searched! Even the Bentley doesnโ€™t show the size.

Those studs don't look to be factory pieces but ones threaded by using a lathe. The threads on the factory studs were rolled and not cut.
