my 72 square has had 41 years of people making modifications and patches to the electrical system. At this point, it's a complete nightmare.
To the point where reaching up under the dash and wiggling things will make various parts of the electrical system work, or not work, as the mood strikes it.
Attempts to troubleshoot this mess are... difficult, because nothing is where it's supposed to be, everything has been re-wired and/or jury-rigged at least twice...
I have a color copy of the 'correct' harness on my computer, but the harness in my square doesn't look a damned thing like it.
Help? |

If your car still has working Fuel Injection, you're only hope is to find a good used harness, or make your own. I only say that, as the 1 ISP sells is for 67 and earlier cars, and is missing at least 3 wires that are needed for the FI to work. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah, in reality, you want to replace as much of the harness as you possibly can IF you're replacing it (you don't know what the PO messed with). Note, you'll still need to replace the dash section of the harness seperately, as nobody sells that part of the harness. But, armed with a good wiring diagram, you should be able to duplicate it enough to get it right. There's only a handful or 2 of wires for the dash itself, and most of them are grounds.
Keep in mind that a harness for the early cars will be longer, and a different shape than your 72. This is because in mid 71, VW changed how they routed the harness, when they added the test network. By that, I mean VW moved the harness from outside over the left rear tire (from the beginning to mid 71) to inside thru the lower rear seat (from mid 71 thru 73). This probably saved VW some wire over the total length, but it'll change how the wiring harness will fit into a later car. Also the 67 style harness will have the starter wire built into it, versus running a seprate wire like they did from 69 on.
Just some things to be aware of, IF you decide to go that route. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
