This weekend I decided to repaint and restore the original oil bath air filter on my '71 vert. I also decided to try to create better decals for them than what is currently available.

Here's airfilter before:

Painted and with my prototype Crankcase Ventilation VW 289 decal

Mounted with part number decal added (again just a prototype).

Reference I used (amongst others):

Any feedback on these decals? Thinking of getting a few printed.

Decals look good. Are they stickers or water decals like the parts vendors sell? The part number decal is awesome. I'd be interested in one or two if you make more. That was always my beef with the repros. All pics i've seen and the few og oil baths i' ve had my hands on have that part number sticker on them. I suspect they can't be commercially reproduced due to the VW emblem.

They currently are stickers printed on my inkjet.

The upper -- Aif Filter cautionary decal needs to be tweaked a bit more -- reduced in size just a bit based on my references. BTW, the ones that are sold as 67-72 by vendors appears wrong for most years based on my research. This is what prompted me to recreate those as well. I have a couple of the incorrect ones from WCM and they are bigger than the ones which I've made -- plus their wording is different, and center justified whereas the 69-71 reference photos show stickers that are left justified and have different wording.

Will look to get these professionally printed soon. Happy to send out any extras I make. Not looking to sell. If it does not cost much, I'll have the part number sticker made for different years as well.

What finish were the originals? Matt, semi-gloss, gloss? Were they stickers or transfers?

Now that is cool! Thanks bnam.

A couple of years back, this person was looking for some.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5...highlight=

Shortly after I cheaply drew that up in Microsoft Paint - I saw another air filter cleaner with a similar sticker on the housing. (but didn't save any pictures of it). The last letter digit ended with a "C".

To add to the headaches and frustration.. I wonder if they had multiple oil bath stickers with different numbers & letters. Corresponding with each year engine??

*edit, I need to pay attention. Just now seen yours ended with a letter "C". First older link above was looking for the one with "R".

Nice job with the Microsoft Paint. Your VW logo on that is better than what I have -- slimmer. If you still have it and wouldn't mind sharing I'd love to get my hands on it.

Yes, each year had a different number. The link you shared also gave me a closer look at the larger airfilter sticker and should help me get mine closer.

Ah.. I didn't have any made. The logo was just an image grabbed from the internet. Cleaned it up a little and changed the color in MS Paint, included numbers text.. then placed next to the advertisement image I had saved. (it was all meant for references).

You're more than welcomed to use it if you want to. Lol.

I've found validation of the usage of these decals for '69, '70, and '71 beetle air filters (with part number decal varying by year). I suspect it was also used for '68 and '72 but don't have any evidence.

Here is a reference from a '69 from another thread:

And here's the version I've put together that get as close as possible on the fonts, layout, sizing. Would like some input on the color. The reference is quite faded.

The orange in the part number decal and the orange of the main decal should match, whatever color you choose. Personally I think the lighter shade on the P/N decal looks closer. Not worth splitting hairs over shade of orange, it will look good either way! I have held maybe 4-5 original oil baths from the period with those decals intact. Most of the time they chip away. In fact, a few that I've had in my hands have had parts of the decal flake off WHILE IN MY HANDS. Mostly they are gone and forgotten, so anything close will be appreciated. In the last 2 years I have restored 3-4 of the 71 cleaners, wish I had these then! Now the tough part is finding working thermostats, or "repairing" the non-working ones. VW Classic finally exhausted their supply.

First pass of decals. These turned out about 10% larger than I wanted. Will tweak.

Second pass. The size on the upper one is ok. The lower one could be tweaked just a little more. And also will tweak the color on the upper one a bit.

I'm not making these to sell, but would like to enable other enthusiasts looking to restore to stock to have these. At the same time, I'd like to also benefit TheSamba for the immense help it has been. So I will make some extra and send them to Everett. Those interested can get them from him, hopefully while making a donation of your choice to the site.

Note, I've only made '71 year part number sticker. I can consider making other year's as well if it doesn't cost me too much. Let me know if there is interest with the part number required.

Disclaimer: I am no expert in this and while I'm having this reproduced for me by a professional sticker company based on my research and artwork, I make no guarantees whatsoever.

BTW: Differences vs. version 1 -- scaled down 10% and printed on Matte/semi-matt finish instead of Gloss. Do let me know if Gloss is more correct The semi-matt seemed better to me. But, I've not actually seen the real thing.

Regards,
Byas

PM Glenn, Everett, or Mr. Breeze. The mods can get you back in to edit old posts. Your work on the decals is much appreciated, good info posted here that had not been before. THANX

I think with the whole diesel lawsuit right now VW wouldn't really worry about a guy making stickers.

Prior to that, yes maybe.

I'm about a week away from getting the final sets. I've posted a separate note on what I plan to do. Please read and pm me if interested.

I've narrowed down applicability of these stickers to 3 years -- 69 thru 71. 72 used a slightly different version where the part number was included in the main sticker. I saw one example, but can't relocate it now.

I'm on the look out for the wax thermostat for my 71 airfilter -- if anyone has one to sell or trade, please let me know.
