|
|
I recently bought a 1982 vanagon diesel, and I've got 2 things that have been bugging me.
The first is these two round things, which aren't explained anywhere in the manual. The black one can be pulled out and the silver one shoots sparks if you put anything into it. The guys at bugformance theorized it was something to enrich the diesel and a defunct hazards switch respectively, but they were very unsure.
The second is my temperature gauge. It powers on but wont ever move out of that small box. My mechanic (who doesn't specialize in diesels or vws) assured me that it was totally normal, that diesels run cooler and the temperature would look "more normal" in the coming summer months. Ive had issues with overheating cars before and this is making me nervous.
Can anyone confirm any of these facts? |

Black knob is your cold start advance. It should be pulled every time the engine is cold and you go to start it. It should be pushed back in after the temperature gauge starts to rise. The white is a european 12v outlet.
Either there is an issue with your temp gauge/sensor or an issue with your thermostat. |

Are you saying that the temp gauge goes immediately to that position as soon as you start the engine?
Or that while the engine warms up it slowly moves to and then always stays in that position? |
The second option. It warms up and moves into the box, but never moves past the box. |

Find the sensor.
Think it should be the old one with only 1 wire on it.
Put the wire to the ground and the gauge should go to the right end.
If it does so, its the sensor or the thermo.
I vote for the thermo. |

I agree, thermostat is most likely. Good to check sensor and gauge first as it's free and a lot less messy. |

If it never moves past the box then it sounds like it has not yet gotten in a situation where it is heating up more than the normal range perhaps? This is a new bus to you correct? _________________ Dave O

Within a few minutes, it should be pointing at the LED unless there is an issue with the thermostat or gauge. |

Never ever ever ever ever ever seen one like that. factory Cold Start is lower down and recessed into trim on dash.Unless the US/cabnadian market had some weird voodoo going on.
OP- Have you looked at the back of it? is it a cable or wires?
On a properly set up up engine (cam and pump timing set up perfectly) You dont need the cold start until it gets into minus temperatures. _________________ https://www.facebook.com/Cow-County-Looms-1010851485971680/ |

The black knob is the diesel cold start pull/push cable handle.
This round knob is the stock diesel T3 setup from model year 81 to mid 85.
Mid 85 it was changed to a larger rectangular handle.

I've had more than 10 early diesel vans, all with the round cold start knob.

All of the factory imported diesel vanagons in North America have a cold start cable like the one pictured. |
