Went to test drive my square after fixing some engine issues and was going around a turn and heard a big bang like metal on metal so I pulled over and saw my front right tire canted inward from the top. After getting the car towed to my house and inspecting the situation I found this (see pics below). I am no mechanic by any means but I do think I may be able to work on this with the right guidance if someone may be able to provide some. I do have the Bentley book and I am searching for threads on this site but have not come up with anything that really helps me understand exactly what went on here. When taking off the tire and looking around it does not seem that anything visible is broken or snapped so I am hoping someone with experience may be able to point me in the right direction.

You're missing the bolts and brackets that secure the torsion bar.
The bolt on the right side prevents the torsion bar from coming out of the left side of the car and vice versa.

Where did the torsion bar retaining bolt and bracket go? The threaded hole above the lower control arm is missing a bolt, washer and bracket. These hold the torsion bars in place. I suspect the other side is the same way and that is why the torsion bar pulled out of the inner splines. Looks as if someone lowered the car and didn't put the parts back on.
Get a manual with a schematic of the front end and go from there. |

Great pic I see exactly what you mean question is how do I replace that? I mean can I order that part you think ? I will have to look around the web to see I guess. Thank you for the help. Only question is I been driving the car for about six months so that would mean that it had to have fallen off while driving and I wonder how that happen |

If I had to guess, I'd say either rust, or just dumb luck that's holding it together.
About the only place to get them, is off another beam. Mike Fisher might have a set for sale. PM him, and ask. ISP West might carry these too, but I don't know for sure IF they do. When you do get a set, put some blue loctite on the bolts. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Your best bet would be to go to a junkyard with a breaker bar and a 15mm socket.
I'd suggest watching the video in the FAQ section on lowering the front end - it will give you an understanding of how the front end works.
You'll need to take the front end apart a bit more in order to put everything back together properly. The Bently manual will show you how it's done.
As to why the other side hasn't come out yet..............luck. |
