Adjusting points and stripped the screw in an 009 distributor. is it really just as easy as getting an 8x32 screw and screwing it in? also I noticed my distributor shaft has a decent amount of up and down play. should I just replace?

Yes, a larger SAE screw will work... unless you strip it also.

Up/down play indicates broken/work/missing fiber washers and/or shims.

It's like having too much endplay on the crankshaft.
