I would like to remove the engine skid plate/drive train guards on my Syncro to confirm an oil leak between the engine and transmission. I also may be replacing the exhaust in the not too distant future. I do as much work as I can in my driveway...some large jobs, but I have never done this before. The two bolts holding it to the engine carrier in the back also seem to be supporting two engine mounts. I know the engine is also supported by the engine carrier in the middle but do I need to support the engine with something underneath before I remove these bolts? I'm a little afraid I'm going to drop the engine on my head. I can't find anything about these guards in the Bentley.

Thanks,
Adam

No the skid plate comes off independently and the engine is still held up.

i just keep mine off, added a thick washer to the bolt so it wont tighten back down into the oil filter.

Would a syncro skid plate fit onto a 2wd?

No.
The mounting points do not exist on a 2wd.

Two brackets need to be welded to the chassis of a 2wd and it bolts right on.
