I just added this to another thread but thought more people might want to see it.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=789127 You'll see Samba member VeeDubn had a very similar idea.

I designed this to be 3d printed and a piece of 1/2" pvc pipe used as the rod. Cut to length depending on where you decide to mount this.
It is mounted with 3m HD Mounting tape. Mainly make sure it won't interfere with the coolant reservoir. Either above or below the reservoir cap.

Whoa!

Nice!

Mine is low tech old school.......a cut off paint stick, it slips into the hold door closed spring at the top of the door.

Don't forget about using the oil filler, may want to mount to the extreme right (folding to the left) or extreme left (folding to the right) Wink

You can kinda tell if a van is an oil-drinker or a coolant-drinker by the chosen location of the door prop Wink

One that fits down in the hinge area and doesn't block access to either fluid would be ideal I think.

Careful with adhesives that become gooey in the heat. And getting those hinge screws out can be a problem.
License pl;ate screws are pretty easy but are far from the hinge.
Maybe drilling a lower license plate mount hole.
What about the coolant reservoir screws - do they get stuck too?

Bolt-on, no mods no drill is a crowd pleaser for vintage vehicles.

The ball and socket pivot can be used in a few ways.

The tape is made for outdoor, in the sun use. I've got other stuff mounted in the engine compartment with this tape.
Because this was designed in pieces, you can pretty much make it work for your own use.
None of the screws are blocked by the location I'm using.

Neato.

Is that sound deadening material on the door? A heat barrier? What is it and why?

Sound deadening. After I did my conversion, I was getting a strange vibration noise and finally tracked it to the door. First tried making the spring tighter, then added some foam tape to eliminate any play but it seemed to have a resonance at some speeds/rpm’s so threw some pieces of Kilmat on and noise gone. I must have had the perfect setup to generate that noise.

Or coolant cap.

They're clever ideas to be sure (and a Thumbs Up for ingenuity), but "props" are basically built into the vans from the factory.

P.S. The black stuff is rubber from the Stant pressure cap seal.

That trick will come back and bite you Kam.

I used to do that before the paint stick.
The cap slipped, fell through a crevice and took me 20 minutes to locate and retrieve, NEVER AGAIN!

Fourteen and a half years, not a problem. To each their own. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

My van has, what I'm very sure of, a factory rubber kinda gasket(?)/filler(?)/apron(?) attached to the underside of the top of the bumper and seals up to the body. Stuff doesn't drop into the bumper.

I have always been a "water cap" or "oil cap" finda guy, but the other day I found a new even simpler solution. Now I didn't know if this is just a fluke for me and the manner in which my "Twin Peaks" bumper are mounted but I'll take the win.

The pull tab just hooks on the bumper just over the 2" receiver hitch. Granted if I have our bike rack in the hitch this will not work and I'm back to the "filler cap" solution.

The hook-up box is for an onboard air compressor mounted behind the taillight.
Made a thing to keep the trailer lights wire in place.
