Need to replace blown alternator. Has anyone converted from 70A to 55A alternator set up? The only 70A alternator I can find is Bus Depot at $305 plus $90 core charge, tax and shipping. Since I plan to replace the alternator wiring harness and voltage Regulator at the same time this adds up to bigger bucks than I want to spend. I have very minimal power needs, don't even have a radio in bus at this time so I believe 55A would be ok. Seems like I would need another alternator backing plate? another alternator pulley maybe since the one from the old 70A has a fan set up on it(usable with the 55A) What say ye? What else do I need to look out for in a conversion? Or does anyone have a NOS or Bosch rebuilt 70A alternator available that is proven to be working that they want to sell?

Why not just have your 70 amp rebuilt by the local alternator/generator/starter rebuilder guy? My guy up here mostly does marine things but has no problem doing them.

The 70A alternator diode packs are unavailable so cannot be rebuilt. I thought I had one ordered online but the rebuilder said he is out of stock and cannot source one anywhere in the country. Very hard to get, pretty much unrebuildable and very expensive. Thought I'd simplify and go to the more available and affordable 55A set up.

Spend the money and buy the right part the first time.

you need the steel plate for the back (actually front wrt the vehicle), the wiring harness, the rubber cooling elbow. you can re-use the pulley with the fan blades but better to have the correct pulley.

i don't see any issue with retrofitting the 55A unit personally. the 70A unit is not that much higher amp rating so you're not losing much. you can sell the fan blade pulley to fund the process (my company would buy it for instance).

you might call these people and discuss it. It looks to me from the fiche that VW sold the diodes separately rather than on the plate. The fiches don't distinguish between the 70A diodes and 55A but that may be because the units are NLA. You could have a situation where the diodes are the same but the carrier plates were different. It could be the field and stator are heavier duty. I also found one thread online where someone easily had a 70A rebuilt and the shop simply upgraded to the 80A parts instead of the 70A parts. That is the best I can do to help. VW heritage has new 70A repops for L170.
