Well, I've decided to finally road trip Route 66 Planning on March and/or April. Also interested if anyone wants to caravan a piece or the entire route.
I did a search, but over 3500 results...
Pointers, pictures, stories, any and all info would be helpful. Thanks!

Weekday, non-peak traffic season and you can get a souvenir pic:
Route 66 in AZ, as you may know, is broken up; at times, you'll, unfortunately, have to get back on I-40 in sections.

There is a section of 66 outside of Needles AZ that takes you to Ca. You climb out of Needles lots of switch backs, excellent views and you actually drive through an old mining town that looks like time has stood still. Watch for burros walking through town. You end up near a resevoir along the Colorado river. There is a decent private campground where you can spend the night before heading out across the Mohave Desert the next morning.
Edit If your travels take you by the barb wire museum, well worth the stop as well as the Route 66 museum. That one will make you cry. |

I have done it and a good road map is needed to piece it back together. The song may help.

I did it a large bit of the center section on my Ural when I crossed the country. Tons of places that went belly up in '08 or so. I will admit that much of it was more depressing than nostalgic. Make sure to get on the bit that jogs off I-40 in Shamrock TX. It has the perfectly restored tire shop from the movie Cars. It is a town visitor's center.

Kam - Can you tell me the location of that pavement marking?
Driven a lot of the old highway -- both a detailed modern map and a map from the early 60s are useful. Ate at the Roadkill too, not a lot of choices in Seligman. |

As already said, California... they're spaced several miles apart along the entire route, some in better shape than others.
On the AZ side, you get the replica Burma Shave signs.

Ha! Considering I didn't see a single VW van/Bus on that part of the journey, it would be a "no". _________________ ~Kamz

What about which direction to drive? East to West? West to East? Any advantages from one or the other? I have plenty of time; flexible schedule. Starting out of Portland, Oregon. |

I'll be meandering from Nor Cal to New Orleans and back sometime in there. Still planning the trip, but at least part of 66 is on the to do list (either to or from). Need to get to NOLA by March 10-15ish and will be headed back probably early april.
I'll stay posted as this develops, would be neat if timing and paths matched up somewhere in there! _________________ -Elliot

Oops I meant Kingman. It was a few years ago. We were heading west trying to stay on 66 as much as we could. I was using google maps when I posted. I stand corrected. |

I grew up in Albuquerque, where Route 66 is called Central Avenue. If you're a fan of greasy spoons and people watching, I highly recommend getting a bite to eat at The Frontier http://www.frontierrestaurant.com/ . The Frontier's cinnamon rolls swimming in butter, Green Chile Stew, and Green-chile-stew-smothered-chicken-enchiladas-with-fresh tortillas are the bomb!
If you're more of a fan of nostalgia, the Rt66 Diner in Albuquerque is OK.
Just be sure to put your valuables out of sight and lock your doors when you park there...Breaking Bad is a 100% realistic depiction of Albuquerque
Have a great trip! |
