Hello all. I am a new owner of my very first Volkswagen, an 83 watercooled Vanagon. The guy I bought the van from informed me that it currently has mostly water in the cooling system and that I should flush it all and replace it with a more equal water/coolant mixture before the weather gets colder. While I am not sure if that is a common practice for these engines in the summer or not, I do know the coolant looks pretty watered down when I checked it. I would like to get it all replaced properly, if only for my own piece of mind, now that the summer is over. He didn't seem like the most mechanical savvy guy  He did tell me about the use of only phosphate free anti-freeze + distilled water, however. I was hoping someone could provide me with a step-by-step list on how to do a complete flush, as I am new to the rear engine design of the Vanagon, and VWs in general (but I am slowly learning more about them everyday)  Also, what mixture would you guys recommend and how much will I need? I apologize if these are noob questions but I really want to keep this thing in top condition and I am having a hard time finding a straightforward answer online. |
