Any advice on a reputable group who would rebuild my transmission and upgrade the gears to freeway flyer gears.
In Calgary but willing to travel..Any thoughts on roughly what I should expect to pay
Cheers

Seems like the flyer ring gear is 1500, and there are only a few left. I've heard its a good mod and will consider it one day. _________________ 1987 2WD Wolfsburg Vanagon Weekender "Mango", two fully locked 80 Series LandCruisers. 2017 Subaru Outback boxer. 1990 Audi 90 Quattro 20V with rear locking differential, 1990 burgundy parts Vanagon. 1984 Porsche 944, 1993 Toyota LandCruiser, 2002 BMW 325iX, 1982 Toyota Sunrader |

AA does not do autos.
Seems like GTA (German Transaxle of America - Bend, OR) is one of the only (and maybe best?) options.
Here is GTA's current pricing:
Rebuilt Auto Trans $1595.00
Turbo Upgrade 800.00 (optional… includes: 4 gear planetary; larger direct reverse drum; extra clutch in forward clutch and an RV stall converter).
Core Deposit 750.00
FAS cooler kit 299.95 (optional)
Shipping (B to B) 335.38 _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

Unless you are adding a lot more engine torque, you may end up going slower and using more fuel instead of going faster and going further on a tank full. A stock engine is barely adequate with stock gearing.
Maybe first try running a set of 205r14 or 27-8.5r14 tires to see how you will like the longer gear set. |

You'd want to add the $1500 for the taller R+P on top of that. |

| You might give Walt Sanson a call at Lees Tranmissions in Vancouver... http://www.leestransmissions.ca They rebuilt my automatic and did a great job on it. Though VW is by no means their specialty, they have experience and as i said, did a great job at a good price on mine. I have a 2.5 Subie as well. YVR is a lot closer than YYZ and just an all-round better place to visit! |

My tranny has all of that plus a modified rabbit valve body that changed the shift points, really cool, it shifts up at higher rpms squeezing more out of the engine. I also have a lower stall (400 rpm lower) torque converter. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

I wish they had that ring and pinion when I built your trans!, might of never got rid of the auto!!
People talk about modifying the governor to change the shift points. That is for wide open throttle shifting.
The Rabbit valve body changes partial throttle shift points, which is good because with the Subaru in it you don't have to have it to the floor at all times anymore.

I have a 3.7 R&P sitting in a box waiting for the engine conversion. I replaced your shaved governor with a used stock one. The tranny I bought from you is really really nice and smooth. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

| I will be having my auto rebuilt soon for a 91 tin top would a 2.1 with DJ pistons and 1.4 roller rockers work with the higher R&P?. Stock size tires will be used. It will have head work and a RMW exhaust most likely a cam as well. |

Would this work for ej22, or is this only 2.5 and bigger?
Thanks |
I had a 3.73 with my 2.2L and it dropped my RPMs by 500. This custom 3.27 maybe too tall for a 2.2L. It would be fine for flat areas but once you drive up grades it will slow you down. You will have to drop it into second to keep the RPMs up. Do you have a camper or Tin top? It would be marginal for a tin top but it would tough with a camper. Hope this helps.
