Hi All! Not a new question, but I need to hear about the feasability of pulling heads on a (mostly stock) 78, 2L WITHOUT dropping engine. Pulling tin, intakes( not a FI),exhaust or whatever first is fine...but I would prefer to not drop the engine all the way out. Also, for re- torquing heads ---are all bolts accessible when the rockers are off? TIA _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

Gee, I guess it could be done, but it would certainly be a lot more work than need be. You could have the engine out, fixed and back in sooner than doing it that way. You could do the fuel lines at the same time for grins.
Unless it was something like a "George Dickel 12 year old challenge thing", then I could see it. |

The general wisdom is that it will almost take as long because it's so inconvenient without removing the engine. Might as well do it if you have the option and do some other stuff while it's out to really make it worthwhile. _________________ '78 Westfalia CDN

| I have pulled and replaced the driver's side head with the engine in and it was more work than pulling the engine. The passenger side would probably be even worse. Pulling the head isn't bad, but replacing the head is the real pain. Never again. |

Drop the engine, it's much easier. When I first got my bus and was on a huuuge learning curve, I replaced the heads on both the driver and passenger side and it was a royal pain. It definitely took longer than pulling the motor and doing it, it bent the hell out of my tin and was just not fun at all Plus if you drop the motor, you can at least give it a little cleanup and get years of grease and grit off of the tin and such. Been there done that, and definitely wished I would have listened to the people who said, just pull the motor.......And with the rockers off you have access to only half the head bolts to torque. The rest are hidden above under the tin.... _________________ 1986 Vanagon Syncro Westfalia Weekender |

| These guys are right, I did it myself during my learning curve, what a PAIN! Pull the motor, you won't be sorry. Good luck! |
