Hey all. Looking for ideas regarding my rusted piece of crap fuel tank support. I was basically poking my finger through the rust. The parts where my new ss brackets connect are gone. I started to grind out more of the rust. Looks like the center portion is still solid.
My idea was to por15 the area. Get a piece of aluminum angle iron and drill holes for each side, then slip it through middle of the supports.
Think this will be strong enough? Thanks.

HA!
I just put the second coat on mine tonight!
Get a 2'' right angle die grinder and a big compressor. Buy a bag full of 36 grit sanding disks. ATTACK it.
It's gross.
SHINY METAL, anything that would become a hole, might as well already be one. Fix those later. Get that rust gone. Then Degrease, Etch, Prime, and paint.
I am going with the POR15 process on this one, but definitely use ALL THEIR STEPS, or there's no hope.
Yours is a bit worse then mine, but get rid of that rust and see what you've really got there. Without grinding away at the bad spots, you're just speculating as to how bad it may really be. Mine ended up being way better then I originally thought. Be sure to Fix all the metal before you do any paint work.

Almost all syncros are having this problem. This would be a good panel to replicate but I haven't found one in good enough shape to use as a pattern.
Although your idea is what was originally there, I definitely would not depend on whats left. Its fairly easy to bent up some sheet metal for your end pieces and weld them in. Then add your support inside. This would be much closer to the original. This is definitely an other Austrian screw up!
One other thing. DON't grind off any original paint that isn't rusting. What you see is some of the best quality product money can buy. Grinding this off is doing more damage than good. |

The part in question can be greatly improved upon.
That area is a trap for road debris, water...everything you don't want hanging around.
All that is needed are two fastening points for the straps.
A search will provide pictures of a few different approaches to making a new one. |

| Yeah. I'll be giving myself a crash coarse on welding next week lol. Just bought one online. I may spend the day next week practicing on some scrap metal then try and fab up another tank support. I think I may just grind out the whole support bracket and see how it goes. I'm pretty sure this is the rustiest part of my bus. |
