My second Kamrann Gihia, I bought her couple of months ago. 1969 Autostick with what seems to be an original 47K miles.
All things considered the car is mostly unmolested with original paint, so far I replaced oil, spark plugs, points, wire set etc. and engine is burring like a Siamese and just now getting to look into the transmission which had me scratching my head and asking for help.
The transmission will go in all gears while the engine is off, once engine is on I am unable to shift and I am getting the dreaded grinding noise if I try to force shift into any of the gears.
Using my Bentley I was able to
1. Clean and adjust shifter contact.
2. Verify control valve solenoid function.
3. Checked shifter linkage and it looks perfect with minimal play
4. Checked all vacuum hoses and reservoir
5. Checked servo and watched it operate as it supposed to when engine is running and shifter is moved to close the circuit.
6. Checked the clutch operating lever and nothing is loose or broken.
At this point I reached the end of the troubleshooting table in the manual with no luck on locating the problem; any idea on what to look for next? Also I already tried vwar.org and it seems to be having an issue as I canโt reach the forum.
Couple of pictures to sweeten the deal

Nice ghia! I had a 68 autostick.
You have a broken, shorting or disconnected wire that runs to the shifter lever.
Check down under the carpet by the shifter, that wire gets brittle and cracks.
Also check the fuse that feeds the wire...it might be burned out. |

Thank you, I love it because despite of the somewhat rough look it is pretty much rust free
Both wire and fuse were replaced, I think I ruled out the shifter contact and control valve since the servo is operating as expected when the shifter is moved slightly. I am going to check the clutch play tonight since I am at a loss at this point of what the root cause is _________________ 69 Ghia Autostick (Also Gone)

I had a lot done since my last post, to list a few. Electric mostly done and now I have turn signals and brake light.
Brakes completed with rebuilt calipers, wheel cylinders and brand new master cylinders and hoses.
Accelerator and brake cluster is once again functional with new accelerator cable, ATF and gearbox oil change. I am sure I forget other stuff but then in an ugly turn of event I managed to strip one of the rear stub axles
After too much head scratching to figure out the root cause specially since this is not my first rodeo dealing with those nasty suckers I found out that the axle nuts I received were the wrong ones!
The wrong nut is 5mm longer than the correct one and in turn it never clears the cotter pin hole which was the reason I continued to tighten the nut until I stripped the axle.
I searched the forum for similar experience but couldnโt locate any, maybe I did not search long enough. Anyway the wrong nuts were ordered from Rockauto but they are also the exact ones that autozone sells so just a heads up.
Below is a comparison of the two

Nasty business on that axle nut. At least it's an IRs transmission and you can replace the stub axle! Are stub axles on standard and auto transmissions the same?? _________________ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐บ๐ธ ๐ ๐ ๐ |

Agreed, the two axle nuts look so damn similar to the unsuspecting eyes yet the wrong one will have you turn in circles literally.
The stub axles are the same, I already found a pair of originals here in the classifieds, (thanks Mike)
Hopefully I will be back on track by Friday. keep an eye out for those bad nuts! folks. _________________ 69 Ghia Autostick (Also Gone)

Reverse is down and up.
FWIW I use the Low Range most of the time. It just seems to get the car going better.
I have seen some people say that running through the three gears puts less stress on the torque converter. _________________ Ghia Owner Emeritus |
