OK, I'd help.

you have a "3 rib" or 002 trans on your hands.
it is era correct for your bus, but if it is "original" to your bus may be hard to determine.

Thanks.

The AK 1600 is a dog and the bus cannot get out of its own way. Not sure what I will do either build it up or replace. Biggest concern is if the present transmission and transaxle can handle the load

Its unlikely anything you do with a stock 1600 will overload any transmission.

And if the 1600 is running well, there are one or two small Japanese and Korean "city cars" that your bus will out-drag at the lights Smile

I've searched but I just need a simple answer please. I'm restoring a 76 westy, the engine/transmission were not installed when I brought it home.
The engine numbers are right for the year.
Before I send out the transmission for a refresh I need to know if is right. it's a CK 18 12 2

Thanks

I’m in Tokyo right now. These ”Kei” cars over here will probably smoke a stock 1600 bus. Under 650cc but can out rev the type 4. HP to weight ratio is a big factor. You’re correct. There may be a slow dog that the bus might take, but it’s rare.

a 1976 bus can be either an early or late 1976. The late 1976 is a 2L "GD" engine. The transmission would be a six rib "CP" or later.

Everything after 1973 is CN or later.

The six rib was mated with the 2.0L engine and should do you fine. There is always an off chance that the gearing has been changed though for some reason. You do not want longer gearing as that will kill your acceleration and hill climbing abilities. Stock is what you want.

Good luck! Hopefully you'll find something local. All the trans places I called didn't have a 6 rib to buy outright.

I just bought one from bustedbus.com and they may have one left ~700. I've seen them in unknown condition going for $450-$900.

What year was the 5 rib for? 73-74?
