Import Direct fuel pump? Any good?

My fuel pump is leaking gas all over ontop of my block, and im pretty sure inside the case, although I don't smell it in the oil.

Regardless, I need a replacement pump for the time being until I get my hands on a nice German one.

Anyone had luck with these "import direct" fuel pumps?

Like I said id be using this pump for 1-2 weeks until I get a nice German one.

Then just keep this as a Spare.

I work at Oreilly on the weekends, and I can honestly say From my experience that the import direct parts are decent quality. As far as the fuel pumps, they are the best that I have seen from any of the other McParts stores, and I have had very few people bring the pumps back. Even then it hasn't been quality issues, so much as once in a while the pump reccomended by computer is incorrect for the vehicle. At least on a bug you know if it looks right. You'll either get the bolt together rebuildable type, or the crimped together disposable type. I have run both from import direct on my vw's without issue.

Interesting that the photo of the pump on the O'Reilly web site labels the top of the pump as the bottom. I hope they are more technically competent than that photo would indicate.

I just bought this one. I'm not getting gas to the carb. The top bell should be fuel in and the bottom bell is gas out right? Only reason I ask is because there's an "arrow" pointing in on the bottom bell. The top bell fuel line in a 45 degree angle up and has no "arrow". Wondering if I have it backwards. I thought the top bell was always gas in.

In the ad picture of the top, there is a clear arrow pointing at the top line identifying it as "in". So there should not be any confusion. Top is in from the tank and bottom is out to carb.

Before you install the pump it might be worth pushing on the rocker with your thumb a few times while covering the inlet or outlet with a finger to sense a pressure build up or suction.

Thomas, I just installed a new Brosol alternator-style pump on my '74 super Beetle (1600 DP), and it was a replacement for the old Brosol. The new one had a "C" clip on the rocker post, however. The new pump measured 3 lbs. pressure (once I got an accurate fuel pressure tester, that was) and seems to be doing quite well. Since the PO made a meticulous effort to save all his receipts (which I have), I can see none for a new fuel pump. This leads me to believe that the one I just replaced was on the engine for many, many miles.

However, I didn't know you could get German ones. What is the brand name for these? Where do you get them?

I ask because if I have to replace my new pump, I'd prefer a German one.

The original German ones, at least for some of the years, was Pierburg and has a VW logo cast on the body of it. It is a generator type pump for clearance reasons, bigger and uses the longer rod. Not sure what the OEM alternator ones look like. The one I got was listed here on the Samba classifieds and required a rebuild. kits are available at multiple places. I got one from Wolfsburg West.

Checked my Bocar pump today - arrow "in" is from the fuel tank... Swap your lines & you should be OK.

Yeah the directions are backwards. "Fuel in" is on the bottom and the top one is for the carbs. Guess the arrow was correct on the pump.

Have not tried any of the "import direct" parts on my VWs, but FWIW, as a mechanic in a shop that services all makes, I have been impressed with the quality and fit of their parts I've installed on other cars at the shop.
