Asking advice for gentleman with a1961 split window bus.Would it be wise to replace abad roof with a donor original or to up grade? To a new aftermarket21/23window roof? Also he cut the bulkhead out to make it a walkthru. Should he replace the bulkhead?

bad roof, what are we talking about here? post some pics.

bulkhead should be fixed in a meaningful way. either replace or complete the hackjob with a proper conversion.

All depends on what the owner wants to do with it and how much money they want to spend.

say a 11 window is probably best put back to how it was with donor metal.

a 13 window with a really bad roof where the owner wants a 21 window that is a reasonable choice...

Does replacing a 15 window roof (hardtop) with a 21/23 roof or a sunroof increase or take away from the value of the bus?And does it make any difference if you did replace it weather it is original or an aftermarket replacement roof?

If the roof is already bad I would say no.

An original roof would be better.

No one makes a complete roof but maybe you just mean the sunroof and window pieces? As long as you use good pieces it should not matter.

Is the reply ''no'' meaning a aftermarket or oem roof wouldn't make any difference? This 1961 split 15 window has a complete hardtop roof but is rusted out all along 1 side,no more gutter and rusted in about 4''.I've heard there is a complete roof made with the skylight windows for potetial replacement. If so would the bus value go up converting it to a 23 window or if I could find a regular roof would that be a better choice and equal value of converting it to a 23 or sunroof?I hope this is a clearer vision of my delima! Thanks

my feeling is that you have 2 different audiences:

the guys who love split buses and vintage cars for what they are. a 15 window bus is very desirable in that community.

the guys who want the flashiest bus they can find, (nothing wrong with that). they might trade it for a mustang in a year or so..., they would want the 23 window, and they would not care if it is all that original... here a 23 window would be the ticket.

i would want the 15 window with the roof fixed. but i can understand the thought process to swap it out for an "upgrade".

Question is: which group does this gentleman belong to?

ps, if you are going for the 23 window option, be sure to also complete the walkthru.

As far as I know, there is nobody making a "complete" new bus roof. there are parts made to convert a bus to a sliding sunroof and skylights, but for the complete roof R&R, you will need to find original donor metal.

I vote to keep it a 15 window, but if resale is the only focus of the project, adding roof windows and a ragtop broadens the audience to those with deeper pockets and wider eyes.
