So, the yellow sealant that comes in the engine gasket set from Reinz. It is not hardening after 2 days. I may be over reacting and perhaps it needs engine heat to cure and perhaps nobody's ever noticed this, but I habitually put a bead of sealants I use on the bench on a piece of scrap to see how they behave. I toss them when things work out. That sample is still exactly like it was when I squeezed it out - like toothpaste.

What say the faithful?

Dunno, but I'm going anaerobic hyperventilating at the thought of pulling the heads off now that they're on. I'm ready to relax and finish the easy stuff up. Argh...

I've seen it referred to as a "non hardening" sealant in other spots, but this seems like it would washout.

I'd for sure find out what sort of adhesive/sealant it is... If it's anarobic then it sitting on a sheet of paper isn't going to do beans. (Other than make you nervous.)

I don't have your answer... but I'll say this much... you can't be the first to have these thoughts. (Someone here probably was though.)

No, not a problem.......
Curious, does the tube ID whats in it?

Many sealants are designed as non-hardening.
But......
I didn't use the sealant provided. Unknown tubes of goo go into the trash.

There are better more modern alternatives than 1980's technology.

Also some discussion.....

I do wonder though if Permatex Ultra Copper Maximum Temperature would be a good choice over aviation for the metal cylinder seals? 🤔

https://www.permatex.com/products/gasketing/ultra-...ket-maker/

Elring fails to explain what us in the tubes.... Sealant for acorn nuts and sealant for rubber gasket...... Set #692.664

The larger black tube is Dirko

I only have one product in the shop since 7 years.

And it's your first image Smile

The yellow sealant always stays like soft clay..until it is pressed between two metal parts. It works fine for our Vanagon head nuts..if the head surface and nut face was clean when torqued down the nuts.

The "right stuff" on the rubber gaskets for sure.

OK. Probably fine then. I cleaned the head nut clamp surface on the head with a red 3M pad and brake cleaner, then same on the nut's face after cleaning it completely with brake cleaner. So, I think we are good to go on. Thanks very much for the input.
