Hi,

I'm about to make some aluminium front fenders for my '66 bug. Can someone tell me if the shape and flow of a pre '67 front fender has changed from the early splits?
The pattern parts say one fender fits all but there must be differences.

Thanks

Sorry about the repost!

The basic curve never changed. You can take any year fender and bolt it to any year Bug. The curve and bolt holes are all the same. Only the lights and bumper holes changed.

You can also take a rear fenders and bolt then on the front and front tenders will bolt on the rear.

Mmm interesting. So it looks like pre '59 had a more pronounced headlight bulge? I'm not too fussed about the shape of the fender headlight bowl.

The fenders for my '66 are a prelude to my all aluminium Hebmuller........

Pictures or it's just talk.
It's clear from your work on the Jag, you can do this, so let's see pics of your progress.

Some say that split Beetle fenders are different due to the 16" wheels.
Then early oval fenders for 15" wheels.
58 and later fenders are shaped differently where the running board meets.
Around 1960, VW eliminated the steel wire tube that connects the bottom of the headlight bucket to the inner fender.

"pictures or its just talk" made me smile Smile
I'll put some up as I do the fenders. I will also start a thread in the readers rides section for my '66. I'm almost finished doing a conversion to the 3 cylinder tdi engine ( it's a long story!)

The aluminium Hebmuller is my long term project, all I have so for is the donor car.

Just to clarify, I work at Metalcraft, but I am not the guy who did the Jag. I've been there about two years and feel I'm still an apprentice ( although at 47, quite an old one!)

Ha ha, yep, there's going to be a fair bit of work yet!

I absolutely hate rat look, but someone called my bug rat look. That's when I decided to sort the body out as well as the engine conversion!

Instead of front fenders, I suggest you start by hammering out an aluminum deck lid.

If you're goal is to save weight, fenders is not a good place. Small stones kicked up by the tyres cause dents, so to combat this, you have to coat the inside with something thick enough to absorb the impacts. That something usually ends up weighing more than the savings over a steel fender.

Thanks for your interest.

The fenders I'm making are for my '66, I haven't started the heb yet.
When I do start it, the deck lid will be one of the last things I do on it- I'll need to make it to fit the body.

I'm not making the fenders from aluminium to save weight, it's just that's what I use at work, oh and I like to be different!

I'll most likely fit a second skin to the back of the wings to prevent stones denting the painted surface.

Anyway, I had half an hour free today to make a start on the front fender....

I started looking at dividing it into 5 sections.

Then I started on the first section. By this time I was running out of time, so rushed it and maybe put a bit too much shape into it Sad

I used a edge shrinker in the power hammer to get a rough shape. Then I'll switch to the English wheel next time I get time
