I have dual Webers in my 72 Bus, a very common setup. I often see the oil breather hose feeding into one of the air cleaners, and I have set up mine this way as well, into the right side carb. But one thing I rarely see addressed is how folks run the hose from the charcoal canister, the one would have originally run to the air cleaner. Given that the original Solexes and associated hardware were long gone by the time this Bus found me, what's the best way to do this with an aftermarket set of carbs? Should I simply feed that line into the other carb?

You should have a nipple on the fan shroud that will go to one of the two large nipples of the canister, this is the pressure side. The other end of the canister should have two nipples, one large one small. The large one can be plumbed to the air cleaner, the small should go to the same place as it did originally, which is a rubber tee that sits close to the canister.

This is all assuming you have the original oblong canister in the original location on the ceiling of the engine compartment.

Full disclosure: I'm ashamed to say I've been running with no canister and the system open--venting who-knows-where--for years. It was just something I hadn't taken all too seriously until recently.

Now I know better. I've read through most of the threads in here and have a pretty good understanding of the how the system works. My hard lines are still in place; the connecting hoses are old and/or missing and will be replaced. (Yes, I know about the one near the spare tire well.) I don't yet have a canister but I have some leads, and I intend to have this put into place before I run the Bus again.

I guess my question pertained specifically to those of us running dual Webers, Dells, Kadrons, whatever, with two separate air cleaners. So if I understand your answer correctly, with my oil breather running to the right air cleaner, I'll can go ahead and run the hose from the charcoal canister to the left air cleaner and I'll be golden.

But, thing is, I so seldom see this done. Are many folks disregarding (like I had) the system entirely, at their own peril? Are they simply dumping that hose overboard? Or have they rigged up a more subtle, more elegant solution? I dunno.

While we're on the subject: I believe my original canister would have been mounted just inside the engine lid, on the ceiling, as it was in earlier Bays. So, can I use a canister from an earlier Bay? Are they the same?

Thanks.

The canisters all fuction the same, oval, round, plastic or metal.
Many run no canister because they don't understand the system, of think it's some power robbing smog component, it does play a part in smog, but it's passive and doesn't rob any power. Some are so clueless they connect a line between the two vents with no Tee, that seals up the tank venting system and leads to....., wait for it....., loss of power! Razz

One carb is fine, there's so little actual fuel vapor in the purge air it won't effect mixture, and the worst of it is immediately after starting so it's likely a little enrichment when the engine is cold is welcome anyways.

Ok, makes sense BD. As for me, I guess I never stopped to think about what all those unconnected lines on the ceiling of my engine room were all about. I figured it just had something to do with the long-gone original intake system, or an anti-smog device with little or no direct effect on my own wellbeing.

Thanks all for straightening me out on this.

An added benefit of running the evap system is it “ closes “ the fuel tank to incoming air and condensation of water into the fuel. Not relevant in Scorpion land but in the Northeast with temperature variations this is important.

just make sure there is always a flame trap in the system so one doesn't have a backfire that does more extensive damage. That is true for the engine breather system too.

to address the slow fueling problem, could one put a valve, in the vent line, that opens to atmosphere ,and just open it when fueling allowing air to escape.

Yes one hose to each carb is totally fine. There is a little network of hoses around the canister on a '72. Also a bent steel tube that wraps around the canister and the rubber tee 211 201 405.

I recommend using the oblong plastic canister that came with the Bus originally. The metal one can work if that's what you have.

Thanks for the reminder and the p/n. As for the bent tube, that's missing but am thinking there's no reason I couldn't use some steel brake line and bend it to suit. As for the canister, turns out a friend has one he's not using so I'm set in that regard.

Noted. I'm guessing that the original air cleaner would have provided that function, whereas the oval aftermarket type that tops both Webers does not? And that the canister itself won't quite cut it either? As for ideas for a flame arrestor, I've seen mention of a wad of brass wool in one of the lines, maybe where the tee feeds into the canister. Would that be sufficient?

Sorry for the twenty questions. Just trying to play it safe and (more importantly) not blow up my Bus. Cool

This is a '72. Yes you could make the bent metal line.

NiCopp is much easier to handle than a steel line and cost less than SS. Available from the jungle. Take a look at your brake lines and see if ordering a spool ( much cheaper than buying by the foot) makes sense
